Default Double clutch? What is it, and why bother?

I've been hearing a ton about double-cluctching, but I'm a mouth-breating idiot so I have no idea what you're all talking about. Is double clutching like this:

1st gear
Clutch in
Neutral
Clutch out
Clutch in
2nd
Clutch out
repeate until 6th

Is that correct? Why would this help?

It won't help unless you're driving an archaic big rig. Don't bother doin it, the s2k has plenty of synchros to help you shift, and it would cost you time in a race rather then help.

The only reason you'd shift to neutral before you shift to the next gear would be to put it into first when rolling, but even then i wouldn't recommend it.

Okay, but did I get the definition of double-clutch correct?

I use double clutching when downshifting to make a turn. It helps in making the transition from, say 3rd to 2nd gear, a lot smoother...not to mention it makes it a lot easier on your transmission.

So:

1. 3rd gear,
2. clutch in,
3. neutral,
4. clutch out,
5. rev-match(I just blip the throttle),
6. clutch in again,
7. shift to 2nd gear,
8. clutch out,
9. make the turn.

As I understand it, some race cars have straight-cut gearboxes, no syncro's, so you typically either double-clutch or shift them with no clutch at all...

And as others have pointed out, heavy trucks used to (still do?) sometimes require double clutching for proper engagement.
