Driving from Florida to California
I'm driving from Orlando to So Cal this weekend and all the map programs say to take the 10. I'm thinking w/ all of the recent hurricanes that maybe the 40 would be a better choice. Any opinions?
I dont know anything about either of these routes, but I thought I heard on the news that parts of I-10 were closed. I think this article refers to that: http://www.ens-newswire.com/ens/sep2...5-09-26-02.asp (about 3/4 of the way down to the right of the 2nd to last photo).
I-10 east is still a mess on the east side of Pensacola but shouldn't be too bad going west. I know there is some damage to one of the I-10 bridges in MS. but I don't know how bad the slow down would be. I don't think it's all that major. From Slidell, LA. down to New Orleans I-10 is history, the bridge is gone. Wouldn't matter to you because at Slidell you would take I-12 until it runs back into I-10 in Baton Rouge, LA. because it's the shortcut anyway.
Where the heck are you thinking about picking up I-40? Looks to me like I-10 even with delays or detours would still be much better until you were way out west.

Thanks for the input folks. I figure if I basically take the 75 from Fla and connect to the 40 acording to Mapquest it's only about 1 hour longer. I'd rather do that than have to deal with the detours along the 10 plus it's less time driving through Texas. I've done the 10 route before and Texas was a never ending nightmare.
Its supposed to be a 30 ish hour drive. It'd be much more exciting if I were driving the S, but instead I'll be driving a Jeep. I guess that its still kind of a convertible and I can always wave at all the other jeeps I see because we all know "It's a Jeep Thing"

So how long do you suppose the driving would be? That is a LONG way!

I drove from Boston to LA, and took I-40 across the US. no problems along this road, unless its winter when you go through flagstaff there is too much snow.
Oh by the way, there is a WHOLE LOT OF NOTHING lol. Make sure to stop at the Big Texan in texas to get your free 64oz Steak!
