do you have an electric fan? I have a desk fan in my room, and i have wooden floors, and that makes a 7-3-7-3 second hummin noise!

do it systematically. Unplug everything in your room. Plug things back in one by one until the sound comes back. If you still hear the sound when everything is unplugged then its not electrical. Could be HVAC?

might be some bug... if not try to keep your cellphone away from speakers... since what that guy said up there is true, when phones are next to speakers they make this funny buzzing sound occasionally. you can clearly notice this when you call someone and while they're still on the line hold it up right next to a quiet speaker

I had to move my portable phone's station away from my television. Also, do you know the sound of a cordless phone looking for its station; on second thought, that might be the sound of it not having a full charge...I don't really know. It's like an intermittent clicking noise.

definitely coming from inside. i went outside to see if the sound was louder, but i couldnt even hear it.

i dont think its the speaker -> cell fone effect either. i unplugged the main power to all my speakers and it was still humming.

anyways, it kinda went away the last two days so thats good. if it comes back, then i might just turn off all the power in the house to verify if its electrical.

If thats not the case, ill hire a housekeeper to bring out the evil spirits (reference to the grudge)

If it's low pitched, it's probably a grounding problem. If you don't think it's the sub, I'd still check the other speakers in the house.

The pitch and volume will really help in narrowing down the problem.

Speakers dont need to have any power nor any connections to cause the cellphone hum. Its the electromagnetic waves emmited from the cellphone that cause the hum. Also, cellphones communicate with towers/GSM satellites very systematically, and like you described, on equal increments. Also, it doesnt have to be speakers. It can be any object that can produce sound (ie...headphones, TV, alarm clock, flourescent lamp/desklight, cordless phone, etc) Check again.

P.S. To eliminate the cell phone scenario, do this. Leave everything in your room the way you usually have it. Make sure the hum is present. Have someone else in the house (or if you have a cordless phone, you can do it) call your cellphone. See if the pattern of the humming changes. If it does, you found your problem.

P.P.S What kind of cellphone do you have (IDEN, GSM, or TDMA?)

9 out of 10 times it ends up being a cell phone on vibrate.. but every once in a while we find a.. [whisper] you know... a dildo[/whisper]

Forgot what movie that's from.

EDIT: Found it! Fight club..

Nine times out of ten it's an electric razor, but . . . every once in a while . . . it's a dildo. Of course, it's company policy never to imply ownership. In the event of a dildo, we have to use the indefinite article "a" dildo, never "your" dildo.
