EA's F1 2001. . . Review. . .
Hi Everyone,
I just picked up EA's F1 2001 for PS2. . . In short, the game rocks. . . Compared to 989's new F1 title, EA's F1 2001 is simply better. . . EA's graphics (similar to 989's) are excellent. 989's uses bright, vivid colors (similar to GT3). However, EA uses a "haze", and tones down the color (similar to driving at dusk). . .
However, the biggest difference between the two games is game play. . . EA's cars are easier to control and (IMO) offer more predictable driving characteristics. . . 989's cars seem like they're on glass and never seem to be able to hold the road. . .
Bottomline, though I like many of the features of 989's F1 game, Most (probably all) of my time will be spent playing EA's F1 2001. . .
On a scale of 1 to 10. . .
GT3 is a 9.5
EA's F1 2001 is a 9.3
989's F1 is a 9.1
GT2 (PS) is an 8.7
EA's F1 2000 Championship Season (PS2) is an 8.5

Sorry for leaving that out. . . Both new F1 games (EA and 989) have other cars in head to head racing. However, I think 989's limited it to 8 total cars on the track. . .
EA's version lets you decided whether you want head to head, head to head w/full grid (22 racers), or head to head w/ half grid. . .
Like I said before, both games look excellent and there are things I love about the look of 989's version. However, from a game play standpoint, EA's is significantly better and I'll spent most of my time playing the EA version. . .
Choose for yourself, but if I had to choose I, I'd go with EA's. . .

Have you ever tried GP3 (the Geoff Crammond sp?) game for the PC? They say it is the standard for all F1 games... IF you have played it, how would you compare EA 2001? I had EA 2000 for the PS1 and it SUUUUUUUCKED! (I prefered Psygnosis 97 F1)
What did you NOT like about the EA game? I prefer realistic physics models and do not like things like the CART Fury game which is VERY arcade like. (when you pass a certain point the game yells "checkpoint"
)
I enjoyed Grand Prix legends (though without enough time to dedicate to the game it borders on TOO hard).
I was reasonable proficient in Indycar Racing (later CART racing) and am looking for a similar feel in a F1 sim.

I've had that game for a while now and love it. The only complain that I have is that it is not pressure sensitive for the directional buttons for the turns. Still trying to get used to the analog controllers. Too bad there isn't a replay theater like GT3. I like it a lot better than Cart Fury ( too unrealistic )

Things I don't like about the EA version:
You can't just race on any course (you have meet certain criteria). . .
The graphics, while much better that EA's 2000 F1 Season for PS2, is still no GT3. . .
(IMO) In some ways, I think 989's version offers sharper looking graphics and cars. . . However, the differences are slight and are a matter of preference. . .
Bottomline, there isn't much to dislike about the game. . . It looks great, it plays well, and should be lots of fun (especially head to head). . .
989's version on the other hand also looks great (and IMO better in some ways), has some great features that EA doesn't have (like being able to change the starting grid), and probably plays even more realistically than anything on the market (but the learning curve is VERY STEEP, which makes the game more frustrating than fun). . .
As I said before, my time will be spent playing EA's F1 2001. I honestly can't recommend 989's game because the controls/game play is difficult (to the point where it becomes annoying not challenging). . .
