ESP, entanglement, precognition, etc.
Foxy good post. There are schizophrenics who suffer with paranoid delusions such as houses and trees speaking to them, or beings communicating troubling thoughts to them. Dimebag Darrel (from Pantera) was shot in the head by a paranoid schizophrenic veteran who believed that Pantera was stealing their songs from his head. We think these people have completely lost it, but considering the fact that what they see and fear is no less "real" than what we see and hear (that is, the sounds and thoughts are being relayed through the same type of matter that our thoughts are), we have to ask ourselves, how do we know we are seeing/hearing the truth/reality?
And I think that evolution for a creature like us is accelerating; the only problem is that it is a jumbled mess of pollution and engineered food, polymers, and so on. If we hadn't ever industrialized our society, I would imagine we may still look a bit different, act differently, and so on. We would DEFINITELY not be facing growing cancer risks like we are now.
But consider the internet. Some people believe our "shared" conscoiusness is expanding at a phenomenal rate. There is information everywhere, you can spend half an hour in a library or 5 minutes on the internet, and your mind will be bombarded with information. You can play around with optical illusions; you can take drugs. What sort of effects will these have on our brains? We know that taking certain substances can lead to changes in neurotransmitters and the physical layout of synapses; we also know that we can fiddle around with neural plasticity. Could we be "pushing" our brains to another level? Or are we also jumbling up the neural networks in such a way that we will probably cause a state of chaos and decay (cancer) rather than progression?
It's interesting to note however that if you were to take certain substances that affect a wide range of receptors (serotonin, norepi, dopamine, acetylcholine, etc.), many users report strange occurrences such as inter-subjectivity, where it seems thoughts flow freely from one person to the next, and there is an almost synchronous undertone of thoughts and words. It's been brought up countless times in Tom Wolfe's Acid Test book. At Harvard they found out taking a psilocybin pill can induce true spiritual experiences. Could it be that placing your nerves at a heightened state allows you to try to "grasp" at some extrasensory stimuli that you normally would not be able to consciously pick up? We have receptors on the exterior of our bodies that relay information to our interior PNS/CNS; take for example, the pineal gland which is set up much like both of our eyes, and is responsible for sleep patterns and melatonin production. They believe this is also the site of DMT synthesis in the brain.
All of it is interesting stuff I just wish we had time in our minute-by-minute lives to actually discuss these things that so many people experience.

I've experienced alot of deja-vu,however its never been of anything significant ...just everyday stuff.
Though I always seem to feel a bit unsettled when it occurs.Like something outrageous or life altering is gonna happen and it never does.

Can you describe your NDE? Anything stand out? They say that, for example someone falling from a high place, time dilates and your thoughts are actually crystal clear as you come to terms with what is happening, and often you go through several calculations as to how you can help yourself and the outcome of your actions. Very strange that in what may seem a split instant, there is a period of almost ephemeral thinking.
I've also experienced things like deja vu, where often someone may be speaking to me or I may be in a current situation, and the vision that my eyes form seem oddly similar to a dream I had in the past. Happens a lot, actually, and usually it is of a certain significance that it makes me stop what I'm doing completely to try and pick up what is happening.
Sobe, really cool story; we've all heard parents talk about being able to sense when their child is in danger, without actually being around. I think one day we will find that there are more "signals" being sent out into physical space than our brains can perceive at this stage in evolution. It may be why some people feel like someone is watching over them, or why so many humans from all corners of the globe "sense" a spiritual side to life. What could theoretically be the next step for the nervous system?
Magician-this is what I meant by I do not understand quantum physics; I simply have no comprehension of the math or the spacial arrangement of subatomic particles and so on. It may be better that way, as I would probably drive myself insane if I was adept enough to study quantum physics and find all these strange occurrences going on around us.

I was entering a blind turn that wasn't banked and there was a ditch on the side of the road. I was carrying too much speed for the turn and my momentum carried me into the ditch which is when time pretty much stopped. I dont know if that's because my mind had sped up and was processing everything a lot faster or what the deal was. But I distinctly remember thinking "there's nothing I can do to stop this, I'm going to die". I blacked out before impact and my body was thrown probably 15 yards and stayed in the ditch. If I had been thrown a foot closer to the road I would have taken a couple mailboxes out with my lifeless body. My bike ended up down the road quite a ways. The guys I was riding with came back to check on me because they couldn't hear my bike behind them. They came back, found my bike and my body was nowhere to be found. They ended up finding me folded in half with my eyes closed. They were pretty sure I was dead. I could have been, I dont know.

Finally, consider; our sun is dying, it's on it's last legs right now. We need to find a way to get off this rock in only a few million years before the inner planets and eventually Earth will be swallowed by the massive dying sun as it becomes a red giant.
Things don't look good for long term evolution.

edit: Oops...that's basically what you said directly above the quoted section. Selective reading ftl.

Detonator - How did it feel as you "came to terms" with your imminent death?
Where is S2000raj, isn't he an anesthesiologist? There are a lot of stories of strange experiences during operations.

So S2ki, has there ever been an experience you thought could not be summed up as a coincidence? Maybe an episode of deja vu?

Stop reading and start watching "What the Bleep Do We Know?" I am a philosophile and this was deep stuff after a couple hours. The movie jumps around a bit between human consciousness and quantum entanglement, but provides some good visuals to help understand things. The segment on the happiness of water is pretty interesting.

Have seen the movie, and yeah the part where they showed the effects of prayer on water was interesting. BTW that book I am reading on entanglement is basically a reiteration of What the Bleep Do We Know. I just didn't like the "plot" with the deaf woman. The stuff about biology and receptors was very cool too as it tied in a lot of what I've learned in school with some theoretical aspects of consciousness and interactions of matter.
But I like reading books, especially since they have studies and related research I can look up on my own. Think a lot of people should see that movie though, get's people thinking. At least the biology bit, I think many of us take for granted how intricate we are as creatures.
