maybe you become a friend of her friend and try to find out (discretely) through her friend how she feels about you. that way no one gets hurt.

talk to the friend about it, find out if he likes her, tell him you like her if you must. honesty makes a Real friendship better, that if you can trust him. and if you can, then you two will definitely come to a compromise, only way you wont is if the girl is a supermodel or one of you has No luck with women and gets jealous with a 'rejected' feeling easily.

I had this same situation. I went for 1. We have now been dating for over 2 years, and I'm still friends with my bets friend too!
