It's sad but true, NO ONE knows how to count back change anymore.
Not only do they not know how to count change, they do not even know how to hand the change to the customer. The coins should go into the customer's hand first, then the bills, then the receipt. Countless times I've been given the bills with the coins on top, so that the coins can slide off and roll under the car.

Do the people who train cashiers not know the proper way to hand back change?

when i was trained as a part time cashier back in the early 90s, i was told to ALWAYS put the change on top of the bills so the customer can see ALL the change they're getting back.

What a coincidence, the same thing happened to me at Burger King just the other. My total was $6.05 and I gave the cashier $11.05. She gave me a blank look and wanted to hand the dollar back to me until I said, "Just give me a five."

I once bought a few items at Pathmark and figured out the total due (including tax) before I got to the register.

I handed the girl the money as soon as the total popped up, and she started yelling to her coworkers: "Hey! Wow! This guy worked this out his his head! Can you believe that? How'd you do that??".

Uh, I added the prices together and figured out 6% tax...

Most fast food chains hire mentally handicapped individuals to run the cash registers. Seriously.

I applaud them.

It just shows how it is acceptable to suck in this country.

I mean, my mom was bad at math, her parents were bad at math, so I just am bad at math. Having this handicap shouldn't inspire me to study hard so I can work basic everyday math problems, it should inspire me to pull out my soapbox and bitch about my shitty genetics. 'Cause god knows, if you are bad at something, the last thing you should try and do is get better.
