Anyway, my father has a story about that. According to him, the world spelled it "Corea" until the Japanese began to occupy the country during WW2. At that time, the Japanese changed the name name to "Korea." Some people say that it's because Corea comes before Japan in an alphabetical listing. Whether that's the real reason, I'm not sure...but I have seen some older American geography books that spell it "Corea." Also, the French word for Korea is "Coree'."
Still, it's somewhat odd to see people using the C spelling. I don't think it's very constructive, nor do I think the use of the K spelling is derogatory or demeaning even if the story above is true. I'm Korean btw.
Oh, and PS - hello everyone! I'm looking for a new car and I think I've settled on the S2000 for now. Looking to learn, mostly by lurking.
An interesting article. I've traveled around Europe a lot but have never been any where in the Far East. I don't know any Asian's except for my exposure through the S2000 and this web site. I get the impression the S2000 is a popular car in the Asian community, judging by the number of Asian's posting here. I can appreciate the 'outsider' feelings any minorty group has. Small example - just yesterday I stopped at car show near my house. It was 99% American hot rods and restorations. Boy did I get the stares when I pulled in a parked in an empty spot in the show. Screw 'em I figured and got out and looked the other car's (real car guys love any type). Snobbery comes in all types - it was foreign, it was new, it was definitely different than the other stuff. Afterwards, I stopped at a Subway shop for a sandwich and got the opposite impact. The car was swamped by folks with questions and praise.
