Check your state laws regarding where the cops can write tickets.

Edit.

But remember it can vary by City and County as well.

Maybe its where I live, but the cops are extremely cool and respectful unless people are asking for trouble.

If they know you and know you have an attitude, you're fair game for rolling stops, 4 miles over the limit, equipment, front plate fixit tickets, etc..

If these guys are truly giving you crap for no reason at all that sucks, but don't give them an excuse. Maybe its where you live, but my experience is that a respect can go along way towards some serious slack. There's can always be a situation where a cop has a judgement call to make about what to do with you and even the slightest edge can help you stay out of the kind of serious trouble that you might not want your dad to find out about, lawyer or not.

My father was a cop, and it got me out of a few tickets early on....but I HATED getting out of tickets that way. It was worse coming home and hearing things from the old man than just paying the ticket.

Either that's one heck of a big driveway, or you're really good.

I got pulled over my fair share of times when I was your age (20ish). With but one exception, I never got an attitude from any police officer I had dealings with. My impression on the "one" time, was that the officer had not had a very good day. Now, maybe he's supposed to be a professional and not let other incidents effect his behavior, but, he's still a human being and we all have our limits. For the record, he never got out of line with me, never threatened me or anything like that. He was obviously ticked off about something and not in a mood to take any from me. I kept quiet expect when he asked me something and tried to be as polite as possible. He wrote the ticket (I tried to beat a yellow light and didn't quite make it) and let me go. That was it.

All I can say to your situation is this. If you come across to the police like you do in your post, I'm not surprised they don't cut you any slack. You mention disrespect. If you're talking to them like you just wrote in you post, you're being plenty disrespectful to them too. This "my Dad's a lawyer and you can't do that to me" attitude doesn't impress anyone. Respect is something that's earned and you have to earn their's just like they have to earn yours.

The simple matter of fact is, if you're speeding, even if it's only 5 mph over, you're still speeding! If they want to, they can write you up for it. I wouldn't like it either but that's how it is. Be polite, speak when spoken to and beyond that, and keep your mouth shut. Then let your lawyer/Dad get you out of it if he can.

Drive Safe,
Steve R.

I think a blanket condemnation of all LE officers is unfair and unfounded. It is like saying "all S2000 drivers are wise-azz punks". I have met bad ones, and ones that helped me (when I got rear-ended and broke a vertebra in my back and neck) with courtesy and kindness.

Doing doughnuts even in your own driveway could cause you to get in trouble, and I personally would support it, if it were 2 a.m. and the noise was disturbinbg to others.

Extremes at both ends, and abuses at both ends, are bad. No doubt.

But the same folks that squawk about being targeted because they have a nice car often are the ones who build-up their cars, break them, then pull off the mods, expecting Honda to pay for it. Then you see a "Honda sux" threads.

I believe strongly in citizen's personal and property rights, but they are not unlimited. To my view, many people, young and old, seem less considerate of that fact - boom cars are a great example: When I am at the gas pump or asleep, a car blaring its subs and "sharing" hacks me off. No one has the absolute right to do that, and it is a matter of common courtesy. The world is scary and evil enough -
