Last night they took someone's 1800 sq foot house and replaced it with a 5400 sq foot mansion! That was really nice, but why the hell would they ever do that? then they gave this family $100k for "living expenses" since the utilities would be triple (or more) than the previous house.

I don't get it though.... the other houses in the neighborhood were probably all 2000 sq ft. So now this semi poor family of 5 who doesn't have any great need for 5400sq ft has a house that is towering over all of their neighbors.

I like the idea of the show, but didn't get why they did that on last nights show.

anyone watch it?
The makeover was extreme because the show isn't called "Conservative Makeovers".

i think a big part of the 'extreme' part is how quickly they do it for only 7 days. In all the shows I have seen they either remodel or sometimes raze and start new, but the usually end up with something slightly larger than before.....not something 2.5 times the original with 20 foot ceilings......

i think it is all done with $ from advertisers / donations, etc.... but.... still dumb to build a monster house for 4-5 people who couldn't afford to live very well in the small house.

I say instead of tearing down perfectly good homes with minor problems, They should send the Makeover team to places devastated by the tsunami and start building houses / Shelter...(Makes more sense to me)

I never really liked the show. The host is a bit of a whack job, and the houses are designed in the most impractical manner as possible. Who needs a gigantic pirate ship in the backyard as a playground? They do a lot of crap that just makes no sense. I say rather than making it pleasing to the audience just make the houses more pleasing on a day to day basis. Scot I completely agree with you on your original statement. I gotta give the show a .

Dude you're talking about Monster House on the Discovery channel and everyone else is talking about Extreme Home Makeover on ABC. Clearly not the same thing. I do agree though that the pirate ship episode was plain silly.
