F-35B Ship Suitability Test
Smaller and lighter. The F35 Lightning Joint Strike Fighter is a multi role, multi service fighter for the Air Force, Navy (carrier), and Marines (short takeoff, vertical landing, pictured above).
Empty weight, length, wingspan:
F-14 Tomcat (Navy): 43,735 lbs, 64 to 38' wing, 62' long
F-15 Eagle (Air Force): 28,000 lbs, 42' wing, 63' long
F-16 Falcon (Air Force): 18,900 lbs, 32' wing, 49' long (This thing is tiny, really.)
F-18 Hornet (Navy): 23,000 lbs, 40' wing, 56' long
Harrier (Marines): 13,968 lbs, 30' wing, 47' long
F-35 Lightning II (multi-service): 29,300 to 34,800 lbs, 43' to 35' wing, 51' long (Meant as a replacement for many of the above planes. The Navy version has larger wings due to low-speed carrier launch/recovery requirements, and is heavier due to more robust landing gear.)
F-22 Raptor (Air Force): 43,400 lbs, 44' wing, 62' long (Compared to F-35, F-22 is friggin' huge. Despite similar design characterisitics, if an F-35 and F-22 are sitting side-by-side there's no chance of mistaking which is which.)
