He left thousands of Americans and filipino rebels behind, where most of them died while in Japanese camps. 5 star general McArthur coined the phrase, "I shall return." He came back and pushed the japanese soldiers out of the P. Islands.

BTW "The Great Raid" is a good movie about the only, or few surviving soldiers under japanese capture.
