I listened to that interview as well - the researcher basically glossed over a whole slew of expenses and quality of life to get to the conclusion that fat people only really lose two years of life to healthy people.

That study was in the Netherlands. I wonder if they would reach a different conclusion if it was done in the US.

Um..... this was one of the arguments used by the tobbacco companies when they were fighting state lawsuits saying smoking cost the states more money in health care. In my state the judge tossed that argument out but it is a legit point.

My grandfather never smoked or was out of shape, but he lingered until 89 years old with many minor but expensive hospitalizations. My other grandpa was overweight and drank and died suddenly of a stoke at 67.
