You forgot about all the nasty stuff that's recirculated in the cabin air of the airplane.
Cabin air is recirculated through HEPA filters on average ever four minutes, so technically its cleaner than the air you breath in the mall.

As for surviving air travel, you just can't think about it that hard. Remember that planes are naturally stable in the air and will correct themselves if you take your hands off the controls. Just like gliders, planes don't fall out of the sky without engine power either. make a paper plane and drop it from a third story window instead of throwing it, it will naturally pick up speed and start gliding. Same goes for planes.

If you know anyone with a pilot license, have them take you up and do stalls - commercial flight will seem like a cakewalk after that!

I have a fear of flying on older jet or prop planes due to a bad experience I had when I was little. I was 5, traveling with my mother to Hong Kong for my first visit there. We went on a flight from SF to Taiwan on an United flight, probably a 747 I guess. No problem here. We landed, it was pouring rain. Changed planes to some old, dinky, little prop plane. Taking off in the pouring rain and high winds was no fun. I was crying the entire time, I thought we were going to die. Everyone else on the plane was scared shitless also. It was so bad for my mother and I that we changed our flight back to SF to a direct flight on an United 747, instead of taking a hop to Taiwan first.

And I haven't rationalized this yet, but I refuse to fly with smaller airlines. I guess because they use older planes and have questionable maintenance? I used to hear nightmare stories about ValueJet.

I don't enjoy flying either. I think I have been on maybe 20 total commercial airplanes and one stupid single prop personal plane (whatever the hell they are called)....

I remember coming into harrisburg they had to do a quick bank left for the landing....10 second banking turn.... and the sweat just poured out of the back of my hands....

I will fly if i have to, but i don't enjoy it......probably not much can change that (other than sleeping pills).

Yeah, we all have to get over them. To do so usually means facing them head on. I used to be afraid of heights. I fixed that one by always going to the edge everytime. From day one i would get a little shaky and my responce was to go right to the freakin edge every time. Still do it but I tend to not feel the same way any longer.

I believe the chances of you getting hit by a drunk driver is higher then getting into a plane that crashes..

just take an ipod and couple of drinks before takeoff and you'll be fine..
