My Critique of the Article (semi-cliff notes)

I know $30,000 Millionaires exist, but there are as many if not less of them as gold diggers. The bias in the article toward men acting like asstards detracts from why they do so. They need to alter their actions to correlate with that of their targets, and vice versa. The author says these $30K/Year kids are the ultimate douchebags, but she neglected to mention that the $30K + debt is going to the ultimate b!tches. It's because of these gold diggers that I'm glad I drive a Honda. I've had a fair amount of girls ask me what I drive while at parties, bars, and clubs. I reply, "I just a drive a Honda" and brush it off. Some immediately lose interest, some continue the conversation, but I had one girl size me up and reply back, attitude and all, "Yeah, I drive a Lexus." I mean... I was totally ready to donkey punch her. I don't recall asking.

What's ironic about this article is that as much as she tried to expose the douchebag clientel of the night club scene, she also inadvertently went out of her way to introduce herself as the hunchback girl with glasses and braces in the class picture. I've seen all sorts of girls, from fat to ugly to gigantic to anorexic, get hit on, asked to dance with, and go home with by these 20-something guys just looking to have fun. I've hardly ever seen the gorgeous super model-type get picked up, nor have I seen the fat AND ugly do anything but dance with their girlfriends. I'm assuming it's because the gorgeous are just too intimidating for the average club goer, so perhaps the author is of the latter?

The author attempts to expose (again, since the $30K Millionaire term was coined in 91 ) a widely-known stereotype of the club-going sub-culture of the 20-somethings, but only mentions superficial identification traits and fails to really assess how and why these people are the way they are in this particular scenario. It must be noted that the keyword is sub-culture. Sub-cultures are noted to have their own schemas and roles. The schema of a night club is one where youngings go out to have fun (whether they have the money or not), are expected to dress in a certain form of fashion, and need to up their game to even attract anyone of the opposite sex. The whole club itself is centered to induce such lewd behavior.

The roles in play at a night club are very well defined as well. If you can't carry an entertaining conversation , drink , or dance at a night club , you may as well stare at the wall for the rest of the night until your friends are done having fun. Better yet, here in Nor Cal, I've seen plenty of guys in clothes 3x too big lean against the dance floor walls and stare at girls for 3 hours.

Knowing these concepts of what you're in store for at "the hottest night clubs in town" (which I'm sure everyone has an idea of), the extremely judgmental/stereotypical attitude of the article only shows that she doesn't belong there. I don't go to my Friday night Bible study in flourescent polk-a-dotted shirts and parachute pants, then complain that the girls are wearing very conversative clothes.

On a side note: I found a pic of the author Andrea Grimes. Not bad. Maybe she wasn't approached because she's got a beer belly. Who knows. This was the only pic I found.

I read it all and thought it was...pointless. She never actually proved the stereotype she set out to prove so her article is virtually pointless. It's a saga of failure, conjecture, and not much else. She found people that used to be $30K millionaires, a few that she THOUGHT were $30K millionaires, but never actually proved someone in a club was a $30K millionaire.

She kept using the same phrases throughout the article and wasn't particularly funny, either. Seems like she was trying too hard.

Cliffs: Lame.

That was my finding in the end as well. The topic has potential but she didn't really do anything with it. We can all relate because we've been/are one of those or have known/know $30k millionaires.

Too bad it didn't go somewhere better after 7 pages of article. On the upside, she is cute in a nice girl way, much preferred to the dirty "hot" girls. The bad thing about that is that she looks to sweet to be appealing to the dudes who just want ridiculously made-up arm candy sluts and that might've been a bit of the problem in her research.
