First apartment (stories/desc/pics)
It's a pretty slow off-topic day, and I just got back from apartment shopping in my near-future home, so I thought I'd pitch this one out...
What was your first apartment like?
Stories, anecdotes, pictures, descriptions, whatever. Many of them are probably college apartments (no dorms please) so I can only imagine...
Mine: An okay place. My bedroom had ORANGE carpet, and GREEN shades. My bedroom door had a hole where one of the former residents had punched it (didn't go all the way through, so I still had some semblance of privacy). The front window tended to spawn houseflys in large numbers, who were sustained by my roommate's total lack of cleaning. (integrate - your roomies have NOTHING on this guy. He had a dirty plate in his room that had about 1/2" of mold on it, before he finally threw it out.) The front window was half blocked by the snow bank by January, and it didn't melt down until early April. My downstairs neighbors must have broken the volume control on the stereo, as it was always at full, and shook the whole building. The upstairs guys alternatively had a treadmill, a foosball table, and did aerobics (no clue), all of which made some interesting noises. And, one of the upstairs neighbors had a girlfriend (a rare commodity at an engineering school!) and a squeeky bed. A *really* squeeky bed...

My first place with my ex was a condo, it was great then we bought a house, then we separated. So now I have an apartment. IMO, I am living in a bad place. Oh, I've seen worse, but there's something about downgrading that makes life suck. I have a two bedroom now. All my sh!t is in storage. I have nasty brown carpets which I'm told were shampooed, but I can feel the detergent in it. The bath tub which there is only one bath had the doors removed and they didn't put in a curtain or a drain plug. The paint that they proudly told me they repainted has dripping stains and they painted over the electrical outlets and phone jacks so they weren't usable. I had to have them replaced. Many doors were painted shut and their's no light from the entrance. I don't have my gas working yet and I'm hoping to get someone to help me move things in since my back is all messed up from my bite.
My first apartment was with 2 other girls, and compared to some of the stories I hear here, it wasn't too bad. My room was the size of a broom closet, parking was horrendous, and since we lived on a lake, there were snakes (and rats, but they stayed down by the lake) everywhere. We too had hideous light brown carpet, but since I had a clean freak roommate, I knew it was clean within a week of us moving in if it wasn't when we moved in. We had recurrent problems with HUGE roaches and had management in to spray at least 2-3 times a month; I wouldn't be surprised if that carpet glowed in the dark from all of the pesticide when we moved out! I had a convertible, but when all of my neighbors' tops started getting slashed, I sold mine and bought my gen 2 Integra with an extensive alarm.
I was thrilled when I bought my condo and we all moved out of that place...
