Do you think that the US government would allow a cover up to protect the airline industry?

If this was terrorism, the industry is going to take a hell of a long time to recover from it.

I, for one, think that they would allow a cover up....

As my wife makes most of the major components for the engines on that plane I have some knowledge of the subject. The Airbus A340 has no fuel dump system like most planes. In the event that fuel needs to be purged rapidly the plane is designed to intentionally drop one of the engines as it can still fly with one missing. It is not possible to lose both engines though as obviously this is a very bad thing. My wife was at GE when this occured and the investigators have seen the engines and concluded that it was not a catastrophic engine failure as no fan blades penetrated the shroud. It sounds like some serious maintenance letdowns of the plane combined with just sheer bad luck to hit the turbulence of that earlier flight caused the plane to just vibrate itself to pieces.

it can drop an engine?!

I hope that doesn't happen in any plane I'm in. I'm on over fifty flights a year and a number of these are are on the Airbus!!!

Chris

You are not alone in your suspicions. I find it highly unlikely that all three major systems can fail like that. The probability of that occurring must be close to zero. There was an article in today's Washington Post about how most New Yorkers don't think it was an accident either. These type of terrorist acts are the scariest -- where no one claims responsibility and each act is made to look like an accident.

I still have a hard time believing the government's explanation for the crash of TWA' flight 800.

Given the lack of credible information that came out of the government about the transmission of anthrax, ie, the fact that cross-contamination in the mail system could not occur -- I'm getting more and more cynical about government pronouncements -- ie, it takes 8,000 to 10,000 spores to get inhalation anthrax. It would have served the government a lot better if they had just come out and said that they don't know.
