Here in California, we can request a copy of our accident record from the DMV for $5 (see this page: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/formsinfo.htm). I did that recently because there was a false accident on my record. I'm still trying to get it resolved.

Not sure how it works for other states though.

Any competent insurance agency ought to be able to get your report in five minutes. The one from the DMV is a little more complete sometimes, and guess who you get that from? I have never paid for a copy of my record, it isn't an issue to insurance agencies, and I don't even think insurance agents have to pay for the service. There are tons of web sites selling free stuff to the stupid, and DMV records are one of the scams, IMHO.

It is NOT free in SC. They cost $5 or $10. Not sure which since it was a few years ago.

^^ You must not have asked nicely. A small DMV office in Columbia didn't charge me anything. I pulled my driving record when I sat for either the NC or SC bar.

(Btw, I don't doubt you one bit. I guess I got lucky or the lady didn't know what she was doing.)
