I would like to begin freelancing more actively, but I have never really done it as a profession and I am not sure that it will be worth my while.

Could those among you who have either freelanced or employed freelancers tell me what they think of my work.

What rates should I ask for (in Philadelphia)? Do you think it would be a good idea for me to seriously consider graphic design as a profession?

Absolutely any comment, opinion, and shared experience would be of great interest to me.

thanks,
eve

I recently just graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design, and im search of a job myself. I sometimes questions if I I really want to find a profession in it even after all of my school. If you have never been to school for this (I say this in response to your asking if you should try a profession in it) your work doesn't look too bad. As with anything, you get better with time and most student portfolio's don't look that great to begin with but later develop into some real nice ones.

The record label I interned at this summer was great, and I one designer told me this, "After a while everyone's work gets close to equal and it's all about getting your foot in the door and who you know." So If you wish to take up as a profession I say good luck and go for it, if you only want to free lance, if you can build up your clients you won't need to worry about working for anyone else. I've barely gotten into any web stuff and have worked mostly on printable material. I need to get my portfolio on the web myself and get the ball rolling.

I wish you the best of luck because it's been a bad couple years for design but I think the market is finally turning a corner for the good.

Muz,

You are absolutely right. Thank you for pointing out the misspellings. I never noticed. I'm usually a petty one for details so I don't know how that never crossed my mind.

thanks.

This is very true I think. However, there are always those designers who SOMEHOW got their foot in the door and they have no skill or imagination and yet they continue generating demand.... i can't figure it out. I know that there are so many incredibly talented designers out there and yet, we so often see horrible work being done by some other people who should not be getting paid for that ... you know what i mean !!

Yeah, i have several freelancing friends who in the past 2 years completely changed careers and took up regular jobs or more specifically, real estate jobs

I don't take myself too seriously. I just love to design, and i find it personally rewarding. I have noticed that people love what i do, so I though, hey, why waste something that might be worth developing further. After all, if we have a talent that we were unaware of, we owe it to the maker to look into it.

Thanks for your kind words. I wish you the best as well, especially that you devoted years and effort into pursuing this career, so you deserve to be realised a lot more than the amateur.

Muz,

but what do you think about the designs? I am particularly proud of my PP b/c i have never seen any good work done in that area (but then again, i could be wrong)

If you think it's childish and crap, say it. I much rather know now than try to venture out in the design market and die a much more brutal and fast death

Do you think that i should list the amount of time that it took me to complete each design or is that a bad idea? Also, I know the format of the portfolio is not optimal, but i have not had time to work on a better one. Can you point me to portfolios of people you think are good?

Can i see yours?

I don't agree. Out of school everyone is near equal, i.e. fairly bad. Given a few years designers, the good ones at least tend to develop a unique style. The great ones manage to stay right on the edge of current trends without going beyond.

Freelancing is a great way to make money and still have time to do things on your own. The company I work for depends greatly on freelancers. We are a multimillion $$ company and we develop and design kids meal toys for some 8,900 customers worldwide (98 countries).
