Default Gasoline Brand Differences

------------------------------------------------------------------------Ok...I have to give a short persuasive speech for my speech class when I get back...I've recently decided with the help of Michelle, that I'll persuade people to think that different brands of gasoline are better.

Personally I think that most brands are the same...ie. shell/chevron/76 etc. only dependeding on MTBE content and if they came from the same tanks/refineries

but I think that Costco gas and Arco gas come from different refineries and tanks...and also use different additives thus making their gas worse.

If you guys could give me your opinions and what you know and any links to actual studies...that'd be cool...

btw, I might use you guys in the speech...so don't make me look like an idiot.

Also if it turns out that all the gas really is the same like some people say...then maybe I will do it on octane differences and why you need it if your car calls for it...

Chevron is recommended by many car companies like BMW and Honda?

I forgot the site but it's somewhere around.

gas is fungible, which means it is essentially all the same. Typically, one refinery supplies all the stations in an area. The additives are added when a truck is filled. There are different additives for the different grades and brands, but there really isn't much in the way of real differences between gasolines of the same grade. You might have a preference, in which case, stick with it, but it doesn't really matter much where you buy. It is a good idea to stick with a single station or brand, so if you ever have fuel issues, you can track down the source of the gas.

I've been using Costco gasoline for some time now, and everything seems fine to me. I get about the same mileage compared to the other popular vendors. I do wonder about their quality. I reason if their gasoline is good as their hot dogs ($1.50 w/drink), then I'm in a great bargain.

haha, nice analogy...but my speech was due uhh a couple months ago

I pretty much bullshited it, but did use some things that people I know and people hear said...I also used personal experience of when I was tuning my old Eclipse on a "standalone" certain gas brands cough*arco*cough would always get more counts of knock then other brands...with the same settings

i've had many mechanics tell me that Techron is good stuff and better than most other additives.

Doing the techron bottle clears out your injectors as well as the valves. If you keep using chevron's gas with a little techron, I'm sure they'll stay clean.

I would imagine a few other additives have met or bested techron by now, but I don't know. If I have a choice between chevron and someone else and the Chevron is within 5 cents, I go with Chevron.

Ok for this past month, I was able to calculate the mileage I would get using 2 different brands of gasoline. Costco and Chevron were the attributes for this observation.

First trial: I had filled up the tank (only 2 bars present prior to refueling) with Costco gasoline and I hit approximately 140 miles (138 to be exact) before the fuel gauge read half empty.

Second trial: I had filled up (once again 2 bars present prior to refueling) with Chevron and I managed about 150 (152 to be exact) before the fuel gauge read empty.

Notes: In both trials, 75% of the miles took place on the freeway and about 1/4 of those miles the ac was set on its minimum level. Tire pressures remained constant throughout study and not once was there an attempt to launch vehicle from a stop.

I still have to find the receipts to see how much I paid for each vendor. I plan to edist post soon.
