Default gay sports figures

I was reading some magazine the other day, and some guy, i believe Tracy Mcgrady said that about 5% of all basketball players are gay. I don't know if that is true or not, but if we go with stats, some small percentage has to be gay.

My question is this, back when Magic Johnson acknowledge that he has aids, it wasn't accept and because he said he had it, people didn't really shun away from him.

What if Michael Jordan, or, John Elway, came out and said that they are gay. would people start accept gay sports players? Would what they have done be erased because of their comment? I guess the magazine and the ESPN playmakers series is touching on this topic..

Just wondering what others felt....

I doubt you'll find too many players that would accept or feel comfortable around a player that was openly gay. If a football player or basketball player came out, you would most likely find them shunned by their teammates, and probably off the team or out of the game before year-end. Not to mention the sorts of insults that would get hurled at them from opposing fans or teams. For now and into the foreseeable future, it will be something that would have to be kept in the closet until after a player was out of the game, and perhaps even beyond then.

As for statistics, I wouldn't be surprised if some of our biggest stars were actually gay. I could see a small but significant % of players being gay, maybe .5-1%, just based on what I see here in NYC. I can think of a few that I think probably are...

And Magic Johnson did face a degree of fear and ignorance from the public and other players. I remember distinctly Karl Malone saying he would not play on the same court as Magic (a statement which caused me to lose a large amount of respect for Malone).

i think i might have misstated what i was trying to ask.

basically, i was wondering if people's perception would change because a more famous figure came out and said they were gay, instead of some third-rated player.

My understanding is that 10% of the population is gay. Why would sports figures be any different? My perception wouldn't change because I don't think they are special to begin with. Who cares? I think you would be surprised if you really knew everything about your so called heroes. They're just overpaid people.
