whats really cool is when they attack prey, they sorta do this hypnotizing pattern that sucks them in:

Octopus can do similar things. I just did a couple dives off Oahu lat week and the guide grabbed a couple octopus and gave them to us. They change colors in a split second. They are the coolest things in the water. It is creepy when they wrap their arms around you because you feel each suction cup attach to your skin and they have hundreds on each arm.
The guide put the thing on my head to snap a photo and it wrapped its arms around my neck and my mask. Then did not want to let go so prying the arms off feels like ripping off athletic tape.
Its wierd because when you look at them they look back at you like they are intelligent. Its hard to explain. You just have to look an octopus in the eyes up close.
But one second it was white with black spots to look like the coral, the next it was red, then dark brown. Against the sand it would go tan. Instantly. Neat to see.

i was taking a behind the scenes tour at the monterey bay aquarium (highly recommend by the way) and the tour guide was saying the octopus was very intelligent.. by way of example, the people it got to know very well through regular feeding and such, it would remember and 'hug' when they came back months or years later.
also it found very interesting ways to escape it's tank, and for awhile was sneaking out at night to steal fish from another area of the aquarium... then sneaking back in unnoticed. they finally caught it on cameras they installed... because they couldn't figure out who was stealing fish...
