people that go above and beyond the call of duty is what makes this country great.
the ones that ignore their duty just because they're not on the clock are the reason why other countries call us fat and lazy.

the OP has no worry from a legal stand point but his work ethic is piss poor.
I agree to a point. Watching a car lot isn't exactly the fast track to the CFO's desk.
Gotta agree with this too. I actually do answer the phone and go in to work when my job calls me, but they compensate me well. Being gung ho about a parking lot job is admirable but kind of pointless. No offense to the OP I assume he has the same attitude based on the subject of this thread.

Completely agree, comming from military background I've learned to take the initiative and go above and beyond regardless of your duties. You may not notice, but employers look at everything you do, which will reflect their future decisions on your pay and promotion. For example, I just started at my current job 3 months ago. Every morning every one uses the coffee machine and no one refills it with water, I refill it every time, no big deal. My boss pulls me to the side a few days ago and says, "I see u refill the water every day, good initiative, im very impressed." Employers expect you to do your job, but want someone who can go the extra mile.

Bodenheimer was named the Most Powerful Person in Sports by The Sporting News in 2003...Bodenheimer ended up taking the only position that was available—a job in the mail room—and made the decision to slowly work his way up in the organization.
You never know.

neither is working in the mail room.........

my girlfriend started at her current job at the equivilent of the mail room, the photo copy room. her job was to make photo copies of legal documents all day long. she didn't like the job. not because it sucks but because her supervisor constantly gives her near impossible quotas and rush jobs after rush jobs. as well as jobs of other lazy copy room workers that never meet the deadlines to finish. she complains to me every other day that she is doing other people's jobs and constantly gets moved to other departments to do even more of other people's job while others are doing nothing. she wanted to quit. i told her no. told her to keep up her good work. when they put more work load on you that means that they value you and you will be rewarded for it. she kept at it and a few months ago when she returned from maternity leave, she was sent to see the owner of the company. He (the OWNER of the company. someone that she doesn't even see on a regular basis) has and has been noticing her work. she had no clue. she in fact thought she was getting laid off but was really getting promoted to company representative. from the mail room to company rep in under 3 years. her office is now upstairs one floor away from the company owner.

i started at my current job as a parts driver/shop help 6 years ago. today i'm chomping at the heels of the shop's lead mechanic to become the shop's go-to guy. in my 6 years of employment i have gotten 3 pay raises. one of $2.50/hour another of $3.50/hour and my latest pay raise of another $3.50/hour. one former employee of the company waited 3 years before his first pay raise. that raise was $0.25. he went on to work for the company for 9 years and that was his ONLY pay raise ever. he no longer works for the company.

so i repeat myself to the op and everybody that only performs what is only in their job title ............ Lazy Asss

if anybody wants me to say it to their face, PM me your number and i'll call you and tell you that people like me will be your boss one day. and on that day, i'll demote you to the mail room and hire that migrant mexican worker that busts his asss day in and day out to be YOUR BOSS.

be proud of what you do whatever it may be. don't be ashamed of it. it's like confidence, it shows through. so if you're ashamed of your work people will see it and they'll be ashamed for you. so do it with pride. it doesn't matter if you're watching over a lot of cars or picking up dog poop or cleaning out port-a-johns. be proud in yourself and your work and people will be proud of you.

The reason they call us "fat and lazy" is because some people are fat and some people are lazy. It goes no deeper than that. Most "other countries" call us hard working and democratic. They admire us and our culture. I'm guessing you have never been outside the USA and only assume the negative comments you hear are God's own truth because you have little real experience of your own.

Get back to me when you work a minimum wage job and your boss thinks that means you are his slave. You get what you pay for, and minimum wage is paying for minimum work. WTF else does it mean?

There's this fable, a guy goes to work and protests that he is being asked to do more than he is getting paid for. his boss replies that if he isn't willing to do it he certainly won't get paid for it. The moral is supposed to be "do more work than you get paid for and you'll get the paycheck."

Those of us who have actually worked for a living for a while know that no employer in the known world will pay for what they get for free. They are only human. Why pretend the man signing the checks is somehow a superior being? He/she will only pay you an agreed-upon wage. I do know people who have worked their way up from the proverbial mailroom, but they share odds with the lottery winner.

Don't be a fool, you get paid to do a job. If your boss wants you to do a different job, he ought to pay you for it. If he isn't, bad on him. The idea that a "work ethic" demands you bend over backwards for a demanding twit is evidence you have never been asked to, so your testimony is coming from a place of ignorance.

There's a few guys at my law firm who started as mail clerks and ended up getting promoted to higher-paying jobs. The firm even paid to train them. But they were working in an industry that offers a lot of room for advancement. A law firm needs secretaries, copy clerks, mail clerks, records clerks, IT staff, paralegals and assistants, etc...

A parking lot job doesn't offer much - it's an industry that produces nothing and offers no services other than an empty space for your car. There is no inventory to keep track of and no supplies to order...just empty spaces. You don't need any high paid skilled employees to do that. The only lucrative position to have in the parking lot industry is Owner. If you're going to bust your ass for a job set your sights A LOT higher. Work smarter, not harder.

A kid at my firm worked in the mailroom while he was going to school ended up getting hired by us as an attorney. Wouldn't you rather work for an industry that will reward you with something better than your own shirt with your name stitched on it?
