Parents File Suit to Stop School Paddlings

"...It had me scared," he said on ABCNEWS' Good Morning America. "I thought maybe it might have hurt her kidneys or broke her back because the bruises kind of went to her back."

Dan Leslie, the superintendent of the Sabine Parish School Board, said that the girl was struck only three times...

...For Megan, it has become a deterrent to going to school. She said she is afraid of going to school now, not only because she fears she herself will be paddled again, but because she cannot bear when other students are sent to the principal's office for a licking.

"I've seen her every day hitting kids and it makes me feel sad," Megan said.
Well good Megan, you've gotten 1/2 the point. Now connect the dots to "if I don't show my ass, they won't pound my ass". Freaking pussy ass gold digging parents and lawyers. This is a lesson children must learn in order to mature into adults. Your actions carry consequences, some of which you might find unbearable. So examine those consequences and make your choices wisely.

I don't think teachers should have the right to hit kids. You are going to punish an act of violence by using violence? I am all for a strict classroom as well as strict accountability for kids and parents. However, teacher spankings are not the answer.

With three swift swats on the backside you are going to cut through a lot of attitude. Seriously, some kids would like nothing more than to be removed from the classroom w/time out and detention. No class == good. But paddle them and send them right back into class humbled. Way more efficient and effective. For the record, I do not go around pounding on people and such despite being paddled. I was able to use my intellect and see that paddling was the last resort in a long line of deterrents used by an otherwise calm and non-violent person. See, people didn't underestimate me and assume I'd lump all "violent" acts together w/out the ability to reflect on them.

Hopefully I was not intimating that you would go around pounding on people. I was spanked as a kid and I also do not go around espousing physical violence. However, if you are going to allow spankings than I think that should occur at home by the parent, if at all. Yes it is quick and easy and may even have the immediate desired effect. Yet, I think there are more effective ways and if it should come down to spankings, let the parents do that.

Now, teachers spanking indifferent parents is a different idea....

I don't care you are God, you hit my kid and I'll kick your ass. No lawsuit needed.

Yeah, what he said. My wife and I are going to have our first child this coming August. This pretty much sums up my thought as well. Of course we don't plan on being indifferent parents.

I see your sides of the equation also folks, but we are talking about an elementry school spanking here, not an Asian-Pacific public caning (sp?) right I doubt a teacher would ever even approach the kind of spanking a parent would deliver.

Spanking probably should only be administered by the discipline master in school. Not by the teachers. I think it is very effective if done right.

Personally I don't think the fact that it is administered with less force makes it sit any better with me. Someone hitting my child is not okay. If things are so bad that my kid needs to be spanked by the teacher, than I should have been called into school quite sometime earlier and each and every time thereafter

Ah, Scott, in a perfect world all parents would operate that way. But some do not. And if they do not, what alternatives does a teacher have as an adult responsible for a grossly misbehaving child?
