Gmail Is Creepy...
I think these people are incredibly paranoid. The day that this ACTUALLY becomes a problem, then I will reconsider using Gmail.
If anyone could reproduce any email i've received in Gmail proving to me that their servers are as hackable as this article suggests, then I will stop using Gmail right now.
I also don't see what the big deal is with targeted advertising. For example people were making such a big deal about these Kroger Plus cards that we have at the grocery store. The point of the card is for Kroger to track what people have bought in order to provide better advertising to them. What is so wrong with this? Do I really care if Kroger knows what food I buy? Nor do I really care if they target advertising at me for products I might actually like to buy.
So who cares if Google scans my email and uses that to give me advertising? I guess maybe I don't take incredibly important things to email, but I just don't see this being a problem at all.
I suggest just trying it out. I think it's a very nice little email program and most people would enjoy it if they could get over the scare the media loves to stir up.

I agree, if Big Brother wants to monitor your email...it doesn't take gmail. The patriot act expanded wiretap laws making it MUCH easier to do via computer or phone.
I do have some fun with friends on gmail though, every email has a few key phrases: boobs, teens, oral
