Please tell me if I'm on the right track here. Each of these manufacturers have come out with their ultimate, limited edition machines.

Dodge Viper
Plymouth Prowler
Ferrari F50
BMW Z8
Honda S2000

Am I making too much of a leap here?

I would add the Integra Type R too coz it is more limited than the S2000... but that is just my opinion.
