I also just finished the Pillars of the Earth, and if you liked that book, you should also check out these books -
The Plague Tales - Ann Benson, see:

Doomsday Book, by Connie Willis, see:

Doomsday book was so good I think I'm going to order it again, if I can't find it around the house.

hey i was wondering if you knew of any other books with the same theme as rain fall and hard rain? I really enjoyed those.. i really got into them
The Reacher novels by Lee Child.
The Lucas Davenport novels by John Sandford.
Darkly Dreaming Dexter, by Jeff Lindsay. This is about a police med tech who's also a serial killer; very entertaining.
The Ninja (and others in the series) by Eric Van Lustbader. Some of his books are a little out there, but some are excellent.
Let me know if you like the sound of those, and I'll see what else I can think of

Dave.

Game of Thrones, by George R. R. Martin. I'm only halfway through, but the book is really good so far!
Lord of the Rings - all four books
Dune - all in the series and prequels
Sword of Shannara - a series by Terry Brooks
The Gunslinger Series by Stephen King
This Present Darkness & Piercing the Darkness by Frank Peretti
I also have read all the Potter books but my all time favorite would have to be The Walking Drum by Louis L'Amour. It is not a western novel but takes place around the Mediterranean Sea in the 1200's. I would highly recommend it.

In no particular order....
The Firm
The Perfect Storm
Jurassic Park
DaVinci Code
The Nannie Diaries
Cinderella Rules
Murder in Brentwood was good too - but be prepared to be outraged after you read it. You'll never understand how that jury could've said OJ was "not guilty".

1. The Demon Haunted World, Science as a Candle in the Dark Carl Sagan.... excellent book skeptical of organized religion and pseudoscience.
2. The Invisible Man Ralph Ellison..... another excellent book... about race in america
3. Neon Bible John Kennedy Toole..... a satire of modern society through a rather grotesque character... quite humorous though.
4. 1984 George Orwell..... always a classic... i read this almost annually "big brother is watching you." Makes you think twice about the patirot act.
5. Fathers and Sons Ivan Turgenev... i love russian literature .... protagonist is a nihilist who accepts nothing at face value and questions everything
6. Notes from the Underground Fyodor Dostoevsky Book about a man who rejects the corrupt world around him. The book is really about the human psyche. The character finds irritation in many other character's idiosyncracies and you find yourself sympathizing with him.
7. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich Alexsandr Solzhenitsyn ..... one character's account of a day of life in a Siberian concentration camp.... i found how the prisoners adapted to their environment quite interesting... some might think it boring.
