A.P.
Federal agents are searching for six men who were detained in the U.S. Midwest but later released even though they were carrying material about a nuclear power plant in Florida and an Alaskan pipeline, the Miami Herald reported on Wednesday.

Police stopped the six men traveling in two cars in an unidentified state over the weekend, the paper said. They were carrying photographs and information on a nuclear power plant in Florida and the Trans-Alaska pipeline. They also carried box-cutters and other "suspicious equipment," it said.

The men who hijacked four planes on Sept 11, killing more than 4,800 people and triggering the U.S. war against terrorism, used box-cutters to overpower flight crews.

The suspects in the Midwest incident appeared to be from the Middle East and carried Israeli passports, according to the Herald report. The Immigration and Naturalization Service decided the passports were valid and they had entered the United States legally and it released the suspects without consulting the FBI, it said.

Florida has three nuclear power plants -- at Turkey Point, south of Miami, St. Lucie, and the Crystal River plant north of St. Petersburg.

Nice knowing this when you live in Florida.
How could you screw up this bad? What the heck are FBI agents on? Who ever made this call should have thier heads examined, then be fired!!!! You know, every Israeli tourist loves to tour nuclear power plants and the Alaskan pipeline! They're a tourist HAVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *%@#!!!!
Government Intelligence.........? Give me a break! If this keeps up, we're doomed.
Sorry, end of rant.

Can't blame the FBI if they weren't notified until after the INS released the suspects. Somebody at the INS needs to go.

CG,

Your so right. I guess what should we expect from the same people that keep letting the folks in the US that want to kill us. You would think the INS would have a clue. We can only hope that these agencies can get it together. Im stunned to think that the cops who were there didnt think to contact the FBI?

Rich,

The problem as I see it was that they were carrying info on suspected terrorist targets and they were released without finding out why they had that info.

Years ago I was nabbed by security at National because my looks fit the profile of a hijacker. I was released and allowed on my flight with no apology. I understood why they checked me out -- better safe than sorry. What I didn't understand was why one of the guards hit me in the nuts with her baton. That part of it was uncalled for.

Mingster,

I appreciate your perspective. The same thing happened to Mohammed Atta not long before the cops let him go and he flew an air plane into the WTC.
I'm glad to be a typical white christian looking type right now though. Thats for sure. I feel for the Indian guy I buy coffee and breakfast from every day. Days after the NYC and DC attacks, folks were not so kind to him.

You dont think there is a chance that these are bad guys?

Mingster,

I can certainly appreciate your feelings and I am very sorry for your friend. Im certainly not down with locking up every brown guy out there. Although not to taking a little more time to check out these cats with the payload they were carrying boggles my mind.

From all I gather terrorists arent coming into the US from thier home countries, but through countries that are our allies or with stolen identities from allied nations. Im all for Israeli's as long as they dont want to kill us. I have a good friend there.
