Well, a teacher friend of mine has spring break the last week of March, and we've been kicking around ideas for places to go. Hawaii seems like a good choice. I know there's a few people on the board living there, so I was wondering if anybody had any recommendation about a visit that week?

Plus - I can't imagine driving around in such a beautiful place in some crappy rental car. There is a place to rent a stook, right? Stook withdrawal is a terrible thing.

Maui's all right. A little too resorty and laid back for me. If you want the party scene, go to Honolulu.

My wife and I honeymooned on Maui. We bought a timeshare on Kauai. Enough said.

Agree, if you want peace and quiet, a place that does not remind you of a city, Kauai. If you want Hawaii with a city atmosphere, Oahu. Not much to do on the big Island of Hawaii unless you want to see an active volcano. If you want to see the sun rise above the clouds and take a long drive to Hana, Maui. I think you can see Whales in March not positive but I think it's still season.

I liked Kauai also, but the locals were kind of inhospitable to us "howlies" (white folks). Seems they still hold a grudge because we brought over the common cold, to which they had no natural immunity and it decimated their population (about 50% died!).

I'm a nature freak, and I liked that Maui had such a wide range of things to see and very little commercial instrusion (much unlike Oahu), yet you could find anything you needed there. I only spent a few hours on Oahu, but the commercial nature of it was enough to convince me that I never needed to visit again.

Just my 2 cents...

Pueo: about Luby's, YACK! Since you mentioned food, my favorite restaurants there are a little Greek place in Kihei and a little breakfast joint called the Kihei Cafe.

I loved Mt Haleakala, the Io Needle, and many other beautiful places there... unfortunately, both times I've been there, either my ex or I was too sick to make the drive to Hana, so I still have a reason to go back!

Pueo: Sounds like we need to have a girls' trip to Hawaii!
