Default HD DVD Battle Soon to be Over?

WB Picks BR

For those of us in this business, and perhaps those that have been waiting it out on the sidelines - huge news! WB has, to this point, manufactured / distributed both formats. That PS3 looks a little more attractive now, no? Sony, Disney, and WB are all Blu-Ray only. Universal and Paramount are the only HD DVD-only players in the business - we'll see how long THAT lasts. All the war really needs to be won is a major retailer like Best Buy to say they're only stocking BR, and it's done.

Thoughts?

Yay! I think we need one more studio to go BR to put a fork in HD-DVD.

Any motion to end the format wars is good to me but things were looking grim, too evenly matched, for a while. I don't care if BR would be the loser. The HD-DVD add-ons for the 360 have been seen at, what, $130 ?! We just have to get on with figuring out which one wins so I can buy too many discs...

So with the end of HD-DVD we also see the end of $100 high def players and inexpensive discs. Yay!

The only real way to end the battle is systems that run both.

Sony is blu ray. There are people who will go out of there way not to buy a Sony.

Could just as easy fall HD DVD. Another studio like Universal and Paramount go into the HD DVD camp and it falls that way. Or something like bollywood.
Also if a group get in the act WB could just as easy change there mind and go HD.->like they did to get the show Jerihco back on the line up.

Yup,
That is who decided the VHS Beta war.
And from what I have read HDDVD is what $$$$$$ is moving to.
Makes sense, cheaper and easier to produce.
My guessis the prices for a dual standard player come down and it won't matter at that point.

my $.02

I've never understood this argument. $$$$$$ helped VHS in what.. the 80s? Back then your only option was to purchase it. This is 2008 and the age of the internet.. who in the hell BUYS $$$$$$ anymore? Seriously..

Actually for me, HD is a more expensive format to author and compress than BR, but perhaps my rate cards are obsolete.

Another plus behind BR: The BR disc has 60% more capacity than HD (50gbs v 30gbs), so uncompressed audio in multiple languages can be incorprated onto a disc with lots of extras (ie BD-Java) and thats with a feature of longer running time.

Well, there's the rental market but that is a lot tougher these days. I see your point, though. A lot of $$$$$$ is seen in 20 to 30 second clips on the internet for free.
