help me remember the name of an old tv show

so im pretty sure its not quantum leap or twin peaks, or any other famous/well known show...
i checked those wiki links, and came across 'the pretender' which sounded familiar but i dont think is what i was looking for
hulu has the whole series online, so i watched the first half of one of the episodes, and i dont think thats it, although i would say similar style; main character was bland/ non-charismatic...
i dunno, maybe i just dont remember enough to recall properly...
i think the show relied heavily on keeping the audience confused/guessing, like todays shows 'lost' or '24' or 'heroes', where the story continued throughout the season; each episode wasnt a stand alone story, but a piece of an overall arc.
narrowed it down to 1994-1999, although this isnt much more than a hunch
ill keep looking, if anyone has any more suggestions, post away.
