Help me start my watch collection...
So yesterday was my birthday, and I've decided to buy a nice automatic watch. I was planning on doing it last year for my 21st, but other stuff came up (car parts)...
I want something simple, under $1000 (closer to $800 if possible) and very reliable. I don't plan on wearing it often, but if its still running when I retire I'd be very happy.
Oris seems to be the best word-of-mouth brand in my range. Tag is better known, but seems to be looked at as "cheap" for a high-end watch, from what I've gathered?
I want a simplistic design... no chronographs, ect. It'd also be great to be pointed in the right direction in terms of where to buy.
Thanks in advance!

Why do you want an automatic? If you are not going to wear it much, you are going to need an auto-winder if you want to keep it in good condition. It is not good for an automatic to let it wind down all the time.

Personally, If you are looking for an Auto then I would think a new ESQ(Movado's low end line), Citizen or Seiko. Otherwise you need to get around $1k to get non automatic watches.

Oris or Hamilton.
They use the same movement as many of the higher end watches, and you're getting into a nice automatic for $4-600. IMO, way classier than a quartz Tag, but much cheaper.
Oh, and if you're ever up in Pasadena, go see Abby at Boutique Du Temps on Fair Oaks and Colorado

I would not suggest an automatic. From what you have said it would be dead every time you go to wear it.
It sounds like you want a feeling of prestige associated with the watch. I would suggest buying a used time piece. You will be able to get a much higher quality watch in your price range.

TimeZone has a large number of very reliable sellers, keep your eye on there and you should come across a deal that will make you very happy.
Like DB8 said, in that price range I tend to like some of the Hamilton designs.

for $1000, you're not starting a collection....you're simply buying a watch.
