Default HELP: Mother Board Problem

I just finished upgrading my comp with a new motherboard and processor but I can't seem to get my DVD ROM drive to work on IDE2. I have my HDD and CDRW on IDE1 as master and slave, but when I connect the DVD drive to IDE2, my bios only detects the HDD and not the CDRW. When the DVD drive is disconnected everthing is fine. I have tried every jumper combination on the DVD drive with no luck. Some jumper setting even cause the bios to never boot up. I'm getting really frustrated since I would like to have more than 2 devices on my computer.

Usually on the IDE cable, there are two connectors. You might try swapping it. If I'm not mistaken, you want to put it with the first one if it's the master.

Are you sure you don't have that cable backwards?

a Shuttle, I'm not sure of the exact model but it's an AMD model.

The IDE Cables only fit one direction, so I'm pretty sure it's not that.

put your hard drive on ide1 and then put the cdrw and dvd both on ide2(one slave/one master)

You need to make sure the jumpers on the DVD and HD are correct. One needs to be master and one needs to be slave. Or you could put both of them to cable select. Also, in the bios, although it sounds like it is already trying to detect it, you may want to check to make sure that all 4 are being autodetected. In the bios, the dvd and cd rom typically won't show up until you have started the machine once and it has found it. Then when you go intot he bios a second time it should be there. Also, make sure that the power is connected to all of the devices you are having trouble finding, if it's not plugged in it won't be found

I'll try keeping the HDD on IDE1 and the other 2 on IDE2, but I have a feeling theres a problem with IDE2. I've done this many times before, so I know about the jumpers and all that, but I've never had this type of problem. Is it possible for one IDE to go bad?

Yes, it is possible for one to go bad. I believe you said that it was a new motherboard-if that is the case it is POSSIBLE that there is just a plain ol' combatability issue (note the possible in all caps :-). Other than that I agree w/RiceBurnerTX in putting them both on cable select. It is also possible that the cable could have gone bad. IF none of the aforementioned work, it is most likely just a simple programming set in BIOS.

I'd be glad you help you out if you can't get it, just PM me.

Goodluck!

EDIT - I left out that it is also not uncommon for you to have gotten a bad motherboard right out of the box (that has happened to me on a few occasions).

One thing to add to what Bill said. It sounds like you might be a little new to the hardware installation and stuff. I know a lot of ppl have problems installing heat sinks at first. Did you by any chance poke the board with a screwdriver or anything while trying to install the heat sink? I lost 2 boards through the years from such incidence. If you did poke it, there is a good chance something is damaged Just throwing it out there as I think of reasons the board might already be toast.....
