Default Help Needed from Rolex watch buyers

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help me since many users buy rolex watches.

what is the typical discount % you receive off of true MSRP from authorized dealers?
what about secondary markets?
is there any difference on the high end watches above $10K (MSRP)?

thanks so much for your help!

btw, i am talking about original new rolexes with box and certificate..

You won't get much of a discount from an authorized dealer, and for some watches (such as the stainless steel Daytona), you'll pay over invoice.

Any discounts I've seen were due to excise taxes in different countries. It was actually cheaper to buy a Rolex in Ireland than NYC a few years back, because you could claim the tax back on the watch from Ireland.

If you're looking for used watches in good shape, check out www.watchseller.com and also http://www.govbergwatches.com/rolex/

If you want some really good info, start digging thru the forms at www.timezone.com

For the best prices on new watches that I've seen, try http://www.smwatches.com/
Markus is a good guy who will get you a good price.

Also remember that if you're looking for a high-end Rolex, you can always buy the dial and bezel separately and add them to an existing watch, if you're looking for extra diamonds etc.

Sorry, can't help you because I wear a Casio AND Timex. Bling bling! Actually, I do have a Movado and I like it; not too cheap, not too expensive, but still nice and reliable.

Remember all the "watch" threads about Rolex, Timex, etc.? That was kinda funny.

The submariner is like anti-bling. But the thing that is good about a "nice watch" is they have staying power. Its something you can wear 20yrs from now and will still be nice.
A good middle of the row watch would be Omega Seamaster... really sharp.

diamonddave,
thanks for all that info. i am entering into the biz and a retail client ask me to buy one of these high priced rolex. i have the supplies, but don't know what to price them at wholesale to retailers/traders..
i went to a show today... and it looks like not many ppl wanna deal in new rolexes. maybe not enough margins?
thank you so much. for your help
you in the diamond biz? or jewelry biz?

tenblade,
sorry about the no discount submariner. if it makes you feel any better. i found out the watch i was looking for actually sells for 50% markup! over MSRP! in some countries.

yellafeva,
me too! i ownly wore casios and timex when i was little... and now the only thing i wear is a movado. mostly cuz it's one of the thinner watches but i may have to change for biz reasons

thanks guys for all the help

As some people here know, I sold fine watches for a number of years, so I am experienced in this field.

A Rolex watch that is BRAND NEW and is bought from a Rolex dealer, will have 100% retail value on it. There is no discounts. Rolex sales policy is VERY strict, and noone will veer from it.

Now, first of all, I highly advise AGAINST buying things like Rolex watches, diamonds (unless its Tiffany.com) and such online. You are ASKING to get ripped off.

My advice to you, if you can afford it, but a new one. You will always get your money back, and then some.

Next, which watch do you want? This matters because certain watches "authorized" dealers cant get. (Daytona (certain ones), Yachtmaster, etc)

A new Rolex without papers can be had for a 30% discount, but only at an unauthorized dealer. This watch however, wil not be honored by rolex in any way shape or form.

If you need help locating a certain watch for a good price, let me know, I will be more than happy to help you.

Do not become a victim like the guy who was sold the fake movado.

Hi NFR,

thanks for your post. i am still newbie in this biz but my partners have been doing millions of dollars a year in asia and japan.

i have a few further questions based on what you said. hope you can help me

i walked into an authorized dealer today and asked for the $23K msrp watch. the saleslady told me i can get some discounts on it when i am ready to purchase. i don't know how much. but she did say "some"

as i understand it, you can get discounts on rolex in US, but just not very much, and varies based on model? online sources say authorized dealer can give as much as 15% discount? maybe they changed policy?

not sure that all online buying is bad... i think, in our jewelry and watch biz, it's all based on relationship thing don't you? it's just much harder to know when they are online. but if you bought from them once, or friends/family did, you most likely can trust again ?

i am gonna sell this watch to my client, a jeweler, with original box and papers based on our relationship. then she can sell it at a discount to her customer based on their relationship.

maybe you can get the watch at a higher discount than i can? if so, i can buy from you. it's a 18K white gold day-date watch. do you also sell preowned watches?

thanks so much

i purchased my daytona from hong kong two years ago, i purchaed it at a 25% discount to list price.
it was however a 2-tone and the stainless one that they did have (which they brought out from the back) was selling at a markup.
i saved over half the price it would of cost me in Australia (that's even with the discounted price off the list price in Australia).
so therefore, Authorised Rolex dealers do discount off their "list" prices.

however, on my most recent trip back pover to hong kong this year, they had more stainless daytonas and they were selling at list.
it may be worth the trip to hong kong to purchase a quality luxury timepiece when the saving could be thousands.
