Help with something please
I have chosen to re-enlist in the Army. The Air National Guard was going to give me a $15,000 sign on bonus however I felt the Army I was once with may be where I should return. I lack work ethic, very much so and I make alot of excuses for why I have not done this or that, some valid, some are not. I am hoping this time around after basic I will find myself with a new sense of pride in my accomplishment and maybe a new found confidence/ethic in becomming a pro active person in my job, or whatever I decide to do. I considered paralegal, military police or medical administration
I am torn however, I have gotten my wavor packet sent in, interviewed with the recruiting company commander and so forth, everything is green light now besides one small detail... what job do I pick. I scored a 44 with decent line scores on the test and no I don't want to take it again I just want out, to be gone, to get the ball rolling. I have contemplated two options, one being the SMP. For all you who are not formilliar with that, I would go to basic, ait and return to enroll in school as a full time student and I would be an enlisted man in the Army as well as in ROTC, after a full passing semester of ROTC I would be undeployable. I saw leaving and returning as my favorite option because I can be gone, come back and go to school, buy a new car (down payment) using the cash I ended up with from training and so forth. However I fear my lack of focus will kill me again in college, my first year, first semester in school went ok but DEFINATELY could have gone better, I slacked... I can't study, my ethic is junk. I would possibly go into the Army this time around as a Medical Admin (the medical paperwork person), do that part time at Maine Medical Center... I'm sure it won't be hard to get that job... and take advantage of the GI bill and my Drill pay cash on top of that... I'd probobly be looking pretty good. However I want to know what you guys think... I know it "doesnt matter what others think" however I fear failure, I am at rock bottom right now. Do you feel that if a person slacks in school at one point, that something like the Army won't be able to change that?
I want to go to school because young people around me, like myself are doing so to better themselves... the Army will make me an officer by doing so and yes I am aware of all the pros and cons of the ROTC SMP. I am just wondering if this indeed could be, hopefully be my saving grace. I hope this can change my work/student ethic so I can start moving forward at a ricky tick pace instead of this crap I have been stuck in.

Go for ROTC. Being an officer will make you responsible for others, and that'll force you to mature and grow. If you don't, they'll frag you
You should read some of the books written by people who served. Chuck Yeager's books are really good.

I liked reading about Chesty Puller too...

There are plenty of other books like these, and you might be surprised at where these guys started, and what they had to overcome to get ahead.
You can also get some motivational books such as 'The magic of thinking big', by David Schwartz. See

Do some reading. It may help with your self-analysis.

It sounds as though you are lacking structure and direction. Remembering my Army days (late 60's early 70's) we had lots of struture and never lacked some one giving you direction.
I think you are makeing the right decision.

Well, think long term when deciding what you want to do. Don't avoid the college route just because you think you might not be able to handle it.
A few Henry Ford quotes:
"Whether you think you can or think you can't - you are right."
"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal."
"Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young."
"Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs."

Longgg story, it would take the focus completely off the purpose of the thread to myself which is seeking help in figuring out what I want to do, as in the job I pick. I plan on going to school still however what job to go with, or stay away from is my concern. No Military police anymore, not after I figured out there current role.
