That's what I was thinking, although I'm not sure if MiniDV works like old Video8 and VHS. They had analogue tracks for the video and separate (analogue I think) tracks for the audio as Skorpion said. But aren't MiniDV's just digital tapes and the camera records a single MPEG stream to them?

Either way, I'd make a copy then send the originals. They will definitely have to most info on them.

Greg, I haven't a clue. I guess you'll just have to hang yourself. Sorry.

You're right, if it does record to one mpeg stream, it won't be a problem, but it would mean the camera's audio out is broken, and the tapes are fine. If this isn't the case (as he can find by trying to play them on a different deck), then if the audio doesn't playback, making a recording of those tapes won't put the audio on the copy at all. My logic being, if it ain't getting picked up for playback, it won't be picked up for recording (which is just playback anyway).

Hmmm, how about adjusting the tracking while playing back the tapes that are having trouble? Who can tell me how to do this?!

My thinking on making copies is this: if the audio IS there, which I bet it is, the camera just can't find it, then making copies would copy that same lost data over. Know what I mean?

Greg,

Put the tape on another camera. Your questions will be answered. A properly aligned head will reveal whether the sound recorded properly or not.

Yea, I want to try this, but none of my friends have a DV cam!

Anyone want to loan me theirs?!?

Maybe I could rent one...are there camera rental shops?
