My post is based on fact. The VW that I owned was crap. This is not ignorance. Not reading my post entirely and, not realizing that I was giving multiple examples of true to me experiences with VW is ignorance.

I'm glad for your sake that you have had a better experience with VW than I had. Mine was awfull.

Andy,

Sorry to hear your experience with VW was a bad, however I do not agree with the generalization that a VW product is a bad one.

I had a 98 GTI VR6 which I sold in March of this year with 40K miles. These are some of the mods the car had:

Engine:
*Garret Chip
*ITG Cool Flo intake w/heat shield
*Bosch Platimun 4+ plugs
*Low Temp thermostat
*Sebring Exhaust

Suspension:
*AVO Coilovers
*AutoTech Strut bars front and back
*AutoTech Sway bars front and back
*AutoTech A-arm bushings
*ABT A23 17X7.5 wheels wrapped with Perelli P7000 SuperSports 215/40 WR 17.

I used to always drive the car hard, and had so much fun with it that I really hated giving it up, point is that with all that, I had zero problems with it. I had to take it once to the dealer (un-expectedly) because of a check engine light which was caused by the AMS chip that I had before I got the one by Garret. My dealer wasn't always cool about me having mods in my car at start, but then they losened up. I have heard stories from other people who have had bad experiences with VW dealers, which leads me to believe that perhaps VW had problems with its dealers back then, I do not think it is the case anymore.

If I am to go back right now, I would pick up a 1.8T Jetta and mod the hell out of it, so much that can be done to it, may be Audi S4 if I'm lucky.

(Did you know that the 1920s VW Beatle was the base for the Porsche 356? and later for the 911, not saying that VW are Porches or anything, I just so happen to watch that on some Biography about Porsche a few weeks ago and thought it was interesting )

FYI...Please note both vw stories above at with low mileage...40k. I had a fiat convertible which did not need a head gasket replacement until 40k - before that it was perfect! Check with consumer reports on repair records for recent vw's. I have owned three vw's - 80 scirocco 90k, 81 rabbit 185k and 84 rabbit diesel 275k(all on original motors) and they were good cars but you had to keep up on them, however you cannot compare an 80's car to a 00's. But the vr6 24v sounds like a great motor, however, it will be a first year top end for vw. When they first did the 1.7 or 1.8 they ALL had bad valve guide seats - brass vs. copper problems...but I've always liked the way vw's drive. Anyone out there with 100k plus on a vr6? the 1.8T is a proven motor by now... try to find the vw website equivalent to s2ki.com - good luck

I have had three 1.6 turbo VW's. The first a turbo beetle with the APR stage 1.3 bar k04 kit. Never did broke down and I mean at all, and I rode that thing hard. It died in a 100mph crash when a drunk driver t boned me on the freeway. Car saved my life. Bought another one and started getting into autocrossing and the car simply was not matched to my style of track driving.
The thrid is a 1.8 T my mother has now things got 30K milage in 1 year and still running quite strong.

Really the 1.8 when modified and in a correct body style (not a beetle) really is very nice.

If I were you I would try (and it will be a stretch) to get a 337 golf. I have been looking for a while but all the california ones are gone now.

Well there is a new supercharger for the VR6. So it is not truly a dead in motor, but the 1.8T is now the new wonder motor for vw.

Personaly I am waiting for the tureg. V10 power ~400 hp ~500 ftorque. Heck yeah. They also will be getting the v12 powered phantom in a little while, IE fall.

They approved the supercar as well no name yet but powered by the v12 and the v16. I am on the list at my dealer for them to pass any info on the car, it looks like it will be priced around 70,000-80,000 in the v12 version so it is something to consider.

Girl's motor?? LOL..where'd you get that from? Couldn't care less HOW much money you put into a 1.8T...tune a VR6 correctly and it'll have more HP...it's a bigger engine and has more potential...5v's don't make much difference over 4...the characteristics of the newer engine are very different from the older VR6...people need to realize that for one.

So many people have had problems with chipping even though it's cheap to do...you get what you pay for. A VR6 will be more expensive to tune...but then again, girls usually don't spend LOTS of money tuning cars....men do.
