manufactured hits from manufactured stars with manufactured lyrics and production... not to mention they have a guaranteed fan base of all the people who watched the show. it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

there are tons of talented singers out there... all it takes to make them the next britney spears or whatever is a marketing machine and decently good looks.

1. no one forces the contestants to be on the show
2. no one forces the viewer to watch the show
3. no one forces the consumers to buy the music

Fox and other companies make millions (possibly billions) from this venture.
without Simon it probably wouldn't be as a big as a success. Arguably, he is the sole reason for its success. The other two judges can be replaced.
