I've taken up the guitar as a hobbie. It is fun and I've been participating on this web forum over on Guitar.com to learn some more about it. However, I think I've been spoiled by the s2ki forum, its informative, friendly, colorful, easy to use, well populated, and the people are all fast and helpful with their responses. The forum over at guitar.com is a p.o.s. The people take forever to respond, they're rude, unhelpful, and it seems like there's only actuly like 15 or 20 guys who actually respond to anything. Not to mention, they don't have that e-mail alert feature to let you know when someone has responded to your post. It totally sucks and I haven't been able to learn much from those unemployed losers. Anyway, I'm glad I can come here for the more important stuff, like cars, hamburgers, and JLH threads...

Yep Harmony Central is one of the best, and if there is anything you want to know, just ask, I've been playing guitar since I was a kid.

oh, is that right mr. mindcore? well perhaps you can help me with my first electric guitar purchase. I'm budgeted to $1000US for both amp and guitar. I'd like to get a "good" guitar which I won't really outgrow. I'm a beginner, but don't want to have to upgrade in another year or two after I've gotten better. I've been looking at the Ibanez RG520qs. What are your recommendations.

Thanks!

Wait a minute.....

You're a guitar novice and want to spend $1000 on a guitar and amp? And you want an Ibanez?

Just get a good Stratocaster and spend the rest on an acoustic.

Redleader, you might want to careful with the "Unemployed losers" remark; you might recall that we have a couple of out-of-work guys who hang here. Good luck with your guitar venture. I remember my first (and last) guitar. It was an acousic that I never played a chord on and wound up as a centerpiece on my bulletin board, festooned with concert and racing ticket stubs.

I already have an acoustic, which is a cheapie cheapo p.o.s. I don't mind spending more on the electric, because I plan on sticking with this hobby.

oh, and saving the rest for beer is not such a great idea because I can't hold my liquor (or so I've been told). buffalo wings, yes...beer, well, I need more practice.

I'd just get a little Crate practice amp. Mine has a reverb on it and the distortion works pretty well. Great for just playing and practicing to yourself. I think they run around a $100. As far as guitars, the pawn shops are ok. I'd just get a mock strat or something. But the important thing is to get something that will stay in tune. My POS Ibanez GAX50 can't hold tune for crap. But it was cheap and free. Hard to suggest a guitar when there's so many different sounds that fit different types of music. What type of music are you goin' to play?
