home theatere
hey im in the market for a surround sound system for my room. i love to watch movies and well i have a ps3 and a 40 inch lcd and i think its time to get a surround sound system , cause the the tv speakers suck balls. I cant find any system i really want. Its my borthday tommorow and well i will like to get one tommorow. I am looking into a system with an already reay souund system. Not one where you have to buy the reciever, center speaker, rear speakers,etc.. One thats fully ready to use when you get it home (home theatre in a box).
Now i dont want to get a cheap ass system but nothing in the $2,000 range. preferably somewhere in the 500-1000 range. Since i have a ps3 andlready i dont think i need one that can play dvd's. But would like it to have a ipod dock so i can use my ipod. And it doesnt matter if its a space saving system or a floor standing speakers. But i want something that THUMPS!
thanks any input is appreaciated.

Ok folks, I'm going to start by admitting this thread is of rather dubious value. But I've been scouring my large metro area CC locations and some others during work travel and managed to make out with just a ridiculous amount of loot in the past couple of weeks. Most of these items have been posted in individual threads but I have some tips about them, and this stuff is still out there to be found. I'm really torn about posting this because YMMV clearance thread just get shredded... but after checking out several CC's over the past couple weeks, this stuff is still out there... so here goes.
If you're local CC is poorly ran - do yourself a favor and go hunting. If you have a CC that puts open box stuff on a table, you are probably out of luck. If they don't, there's gold to be found. EVERYTHING I've found was labeled incorrectly. Many things just had display tags. Some things weren't even in inventory. But if it has one of those skinny inventory sticky labels on it, they'll sell it. It might take awhile, but the rewards can be very nice. Check the abandoned audio rooms. Check all the TV stands. Check the dusty displays. I'll note the prices offered vs. what showed in the system. And argue about the pricing. They can go lower.
The best deals are items that are on clearance, but not tagged as open box. Those items have a very low price to start with, and get knocked down when they push it over to sell as a display. Open box tags and clearance tags are often wrong. I promise, if you find this stuff at your local CC, have them check the price, and make sure it's the open box or clearance price they give you, which is lower than the NIB price that pulls up in the system. Sometimes a manager has to approve it or they have to move the display to saleable status.
My area was east Detroit metro. Taylor, Dearborn, Madison heights are mostly cleaned out. Ann Arbor is a tight ship, I doubt there is much there. I've had my fill and thought about it for awhile if this was even worth posting, but I've taken the time and hope it helps somebody. If you live in a big metro area with some sort of run down areas, those are the CC's to hit. There are very few advantages to living here, but I'll take what I can get.
All Denon AVR-x87 receivers are very cheap. There is a thread about this.
- AVR-987 - $180 (open box) - $310 (open box) - $329 in the system
- AVR-887 - $100 (display, this was a fluke I think)
- AVR-687 - $110 (NIB units still out there, multiple stores)
- AVR-587 - $70 (open box/displays multiple stores)
All Pioneer VSXx16 receivers should be very cheap. There is not a thread about this that I found. I only found the VSX516 model, but others from that line should be low.
- Pioneer VSX516 - $55 (multiple stores, system clearance price)
All of the old (not horizon) Boston Acoustics stuff is on clearance. This includes some of the truly good VR/CR series stuff and all the wall mount and outdoor stuff.
- Boston VR2 - $140 ea (multiple stores, system open box price - great deal)
- Boston VRC - $60 (display - great deal)
- Boston CR67 pair - $90 (display - good deal)
- Boston CRC7 - $70 (displays, multiples, probably too high a price, but fair)
- Boston XB6 sub - $75 (display - great price, not really a very good HT sub)
- Boston XB2 sub - $85 (display - same as above)
- If you find Boston XB4 or XB8 subs, those should be on clearance too. Haven't seen any of those, just XB2 and XB6.
- Boston Bravo II's - $40 ea (displays at multiple stores, NIB at $50)
- Boston P430's - $65 (displays)
- The biggest Boston outdoor speakers were something like $150 per pair tagged at $399. I had no interest in those but they are on clearance too and are all over. If you need them have them price checked.
All of the old Velodyne DPS and VRP subs
- Velodyne VRP 1200 12" sub - $140 (displays)
- Velodyne VRP 1000 10" sub - $130 (displays, not really that good of a price)
- DPS 10 model was display was $200 I don't know about that deal but it's a big price drop
Old KEF stock:
- KEF 2005.2 - $209 NIB (had clerk check, were not on display) These showed as $239 in the system but I argued about how old they were and buying two, and he dropped them to $209.
All of the old Onkyo receivers x74 models are on fat clearance. I haven't seen any of those but there is a thread about them too.

thats true... no high def dvd no blu ray no ipod stuff... thats coz the 3-2-1 been out for a while... on a side note, bose makes something specifically for the ipod.
sorry i'm really a big fan of bose since i had it in my miata LS. they make amazing sound for such small speakers

Sorry but Bose is complete garbage when price is factored in. If you have a PS3 that does 1080P don't even glance at Bose -- they don't support HD in any product yet.
At $500 - $1000 you have a few options that stand out but for my money it would be the Mirage Nanostat 5.1 system hands down. You'll have to add a receiver but unless you want to go to bookshelf-sized speakers this is the one to get:

I was just in the same situation; new 52" LCD and Ps3 for Blu-Ray. I went with the Marantz soundbar and subwoofer because I want great front sound with no wires anywhere. It you think about that route and are okay doubling your budget look at the Yamaha and Marantz units.
Good luck.
