Horror Stories...
so i've been meaning to change my oil for awhile and i finally got around to it on Sunday afternoon. this is the first time i've changed the oil on the ess-too-kay since i bought it... the last time the oil was changed was at the dealership that i bought it from. looking at the car i'm thinking: this will be a piece of cake... since i can actually SEE the oil filter from the engine bay. on my integra you had to reach up at an angle into this cranny to get to the filter.
so i drain the oil and i go to take the filter off by hand and of course that doesn't work, cause it never does if a dealership or anyone else changes your oil. i WALK to the store cause my car is out of commission with no oil at this point. i kind of take a wild guess with the filter wrench. i brought the filter i was using to replace the old filter and figured they'd be the same size and used that to pick the wrench... (the new filter was a fram and the one already on the car was like a pennzoil or something weird...) walk back to my house in the sweltering august 3 pm heat, find out that the wrench doesn't fit the filter.
walk back to the store... pick a smaller wrench, walk back, doesn't fit again.
walk back to the store... pick an even smaller wrench, walk back to my house, find out this one is too small.
i'm pissed, NONE of the wrenches fit this damn filter. i've just made 3 trips to the store...
so at this point i take a giant screwdriver and completely MASSACRE the oil filter.
except i don't have any room to turn the screwdriver enough to get the filter off. i sit down for a minute and decide that i should probably just go buy an adjustable filter wrench. (hmm... why didn't i think of that before?
) i walk to the store again, get the adjustable, come back and realize that because i just mutilated the filter with a screwdriver, the wrench won't go onto the filter tight enough to make it come off. it's hot, i'm covered in oil, i've cut myself multiple times on that DAMN heat shield that sits between the engine and the battery and THEN i drop a screwdriver and the NEW oil filter into the drain pan and that just sends me over the edge. i start BAWLING.
i call my boyfriend crying... at first hes like "omg omg, what's wrong?!" and i tell him why i'm crying and hes just like "oh god... it's just an oil filter." he's on a fishing trip so he sends 4 of his buddies over to the rescue. they finally get the damn thing off. i ended up coming down with a fever that evening and i totally think it was cause of the stress that damn oil filter caused me. i missed work yesterday cause i was sick.
when guys work on cars and things don't go right they usually start breaking things... apparently girls cry. hahaha.... share horror stories here.

, never let a woman do a man's job.One time I was doing a brake job on my car. After bleeding the system and tightening up one of the bleeder bolts, it broke off (POS). I had to drive the car up to a repair shop/parts store on the emergency brake in rush hour traffic and it was terribly nerve racking not to have full brake power.
I changed the "Hose from hell" as it is known among MR2 turbo owners. It is a tiny coolant hose that comes out of the block I forget what it connects to, basically a $4 part. It is between the backside of the engine between the block and the bulhead for the passenger compartment. It blows at about 100-130k miles on average. I decided to replace it out of preventative maintenance at 120K.
You have two choices, pull the whole head or contort like crazy and remove all kinds of stuff but work in space only a three year olds hands can fit. It took me ten hours of hand slicing work, much of which I spent upside down. In order to reach a couple bolts, I had to lean over the car, rest one shoulder on the engine a reach as far as I could with my legs up in the air. The bolts, upon reassembly were very easy to misthread so it took a couple dozen tries.
When the work was all done I find that not only do I need a couple weeks in traction (not literally) but the hose itself was in fine shape and could have lasted another 50,000 miles easy. I sold the car about 5,000 miles later.
The neighbor kids learned a whole bunch of new words that week.

that's all right, even guys end up calling a friend and screaming into the phone about their car occasionally lol.
See, maybe I missed it, but it appears you didn't have a sufficient supply of beer on hand.
That was your only mistake. If you consume a beer every time you get frustrated, you begin to look forward to frustration, and the job becomes entertainment rather than irritation

First time I changed the oil in the S2000 it took me almost a week. I couldn't jack the car up, it was so low. I went out to Lowes and bought some 2X10s and built a set of ramps. That took a couple of days. Of course I couldn't get the oil filter off by hand, so I ordered a wrench from HTG. Everything went smooth from that point on.

No horror stories.... just some Whore stories..... you should start a thread about those...

oh yea, and for scot's sake, after we replaced the filter me and my boyfriend's buddies finished the afternoon off with a hot steamy gang bang in my garage.

OK. Anyone remember the slant 6 Chrysler products? That slant 6 engine has a 5/8" or 3/4" hose that is about 2" long from the water pump to the head. The hose fittings only have about 1/2" between them. Chrysler folk lore has it that hose can be changed by boiling the new hose to soften it, lube the fittings, fold the hose in half and push it in between the fittings. Fortunately I only had to do that once.
If you ever had to remove the head, you put a new hose on.
