I'm looking at the recycler here, and I see a 750il (1996) for less than $30k.

1997 740 for like $28k

that's a lot of loss in value in just 4 years...

If that's the case, I hope it keeps up. Then I can have a 2001 M5 in about 3 years for $30k.

While BMW doesn't always hold it's value as some would expect, I think it's more linked to which model. I've noticed the same thing about the 7 series, that's one of the major reasons I keep my out for a nice newly used one. I think the late model 3 and 5's hold their value better and I think that goes without saying on the newer M cars.

most of the premium luxury cars don't hold any value at all. You can get a good condition '98 '97 Audi A8 Quattro for low $30K in the dealership. (I am thinking about buying one, all aluminum car. Perfect for Michigan winter.) but, the problem with these cars is that there are so much eletronics gadgets in it. A little problem with a simple button, the whole system can go down. It is costly to repair (diag) one of these things.

I've noticed that they always seem to have (what seems to me) higher than average milage when they appear to be so cheap.

I've noticed that too about the Z3s and M Roadster. I've found 30K mile M's for 30-35K and Z3s for 20-25K. If I ever wanted a BMW I would definately get a "gently' used one.

for 30k? damn that's a good price.

Around here, beamers DO retain their value. A 750IL late 90s was still around 60 grand.

Older M3s were still around 30-40 grand.

i would have to say that the higher end you go the lower the resale value percentage...not sure why this happens but it could be that the resale market isn't that full with customers
