Default How do I format my computer COMPLETELY?

Hey guys,

I've had to format my 1 1/2 month old computer twice so far because I was getting viruses - I'm assuming from Kazaa, but the problem doesn't seem to have gone away. I have a virus now, and I'd like to format the correct way and install Norton right away to avoid any future problems. Can someone tell me how to format, including all of the partition information and anything that wouldn't normally be erased by a regular format?

Get a win98 boot disk (www.bootdisk.com) and boot up with that in it

Get to the dos prompt

FDISK it to remove and create partitions
FORMAT the partitions
Install OS
Intall Norton

Do that all b4 connecting to the internet.

Dump Kazza - use something like emule instead

Also though, you should go out to windowsupdate.com and get all the critical updates once you have the OS and all your device drivers installed.

I doubt Kazaa is the problem in itself. More likely the crud you are downloading via Kazaa contains virii or trojans. Think about it... any pleb who wants to distribute trojans simply embeds them in another file or program, drops them onto his Kazaa server and lets people download from him willy nilly.

You'll get the same problem with any P2P program. They're the perfect distribution tool for malicious hackers (well script kiddies actually. Hacking is probably something well above them).

If you insist on using these programs the simple answer is to Virus scan everything thet you download with it.

Word docs are another item that should ALWAYS be scanned. You usually only get infected by a virus because you have invited it in (usually via email or as I said, P2P programs).

Know someone with a Mac? Have them hook up the IDE drive and format it with the disk utility. It has an advanced option called "Zero all sectors while formatting".

Yes, and also realize Kazaa is the worst place to ... erm... "evaluate" software.
