If you're going to learn how to ride, might as well do it through the MSF course and get a motorcycle endorsement on your driver's license. It's not hard and the costs are minimal.
The MSF class is really ALOT of fun. There's minimal class time and you get plenty of riding time. Here in Jersey we used Honda Rebels. You also get cheaper insurance rates after passing the MSF classes.

the MSF class will teach you how to ride a motorcycle. In some states you are offered a road test waiver upon completion of the class. in NYS, it also counts as a defensive driving course which lowers insurance or takes away some points on your license.
It's worth every penny in my opinion because you get instruction on how to safely operate a motorcycle as well as a place in which you can find out if being on 2 wheels is right for you.
you'll come out of the class more confident about being on a bike. if you can ride a bicycle and balance the weight of a motorcycle you'll be fine.

In PA, all you need is a valid drivers license, $10, and a heartbeat to get the permit. You have to pass a DMV test of some sort or an MSF course to get your license.

Stay away from sportbikes if low insurance costs are what your after. Naked bikes or those chrome laden things have lower insurance and conversely lower thrills.
Just get liability to reduce your premium.
Get some miles and you will think cages ares for geezers. This coming from a geezer familyman. First time you drag your knee in a corner at the track and you will be hooked. First time you lift the front tire coming out of a corner when you are hard on the gas you will be hooked. First time you lift the rear tire off the ground out braking some fool into a corner you will be hooked.
Then go out and get a turbo Busa and own the straight roads. Mine does 0 to 150 in around 7 seconds , pump gas , street legal. Bought the bike and turbo a few years ago for around 20K. Try getting that type of performance out of some cage.
