how do you get rid of telemarketers?
No matter what they're selling, and especially if they seem to be obnoxiously persisitent, I tell them I'm very interested in their service or product, but I was just on my way out. I then ask them for their home number, promising to call them tomorrow during the dinner hour. I have yet to get a number and they usually cease being so pesistent.
- Listen to their entire presentation, and then ask them if they can repeat that. See how
many times they will repeat it before you catch on.
- For newspapers calls, tell them you can't read, then ask if they have a service where
someone will come and read the paper for you, because you've always wanted to know the stories behind those neat pictures.
- If you have a few people around, say "Let me give you to the person in charge of those decisions." Then pass the phone to a friend, who listens to the whole presentation again. See how many people you can get to before they hang up. For bonus points, start making loops, starting with the original person who answered the call.
- Anything you can think of that will keep them on the phone longer, but make you and your pals laugh in the mean time. Remember, the less time they spend on the phone per call means the more bonus they get... so the more time you take up, the less they get paid, which is also pretty funny!

I have a blast;
...my wife shakes her head in pitiful disbelief
That's my best one... Other times, I'll catch the pause up front -- then knowing what I'm facing, I'll talk like a child (I mean like a 2 year old!)... They ask, "Is your daddy home?"...my jibberish mixed with "dada" follows. "Let me talk to one of your parents, please"...I follow with silence, drools, giggles, etc.
Hey, I own an S2000...I'm a kid anyway you cut me up! Who cares that I'm 36!
QWEST has a service that costs $5.95/month that asks "This number does not accept solicitors, if you're NOT a solicitor then press 1 to connect." There are options that you can select to de-select numbers that won't hear this message. Because there are severe financial penalties to solicitors that ignore this message, I get NO calls from solicitors anymore.
Best $5.95/month I ever spent.

If they are trying to sell you something, cut in and ask them for their credit card number. They'll ask "Why?". Inform them that "you were about to ask me for mine, correct?" and that you only thought it would be fair if you exchanged numbers.
Schatten,
Give me your full name and address via PM and I'll give it to my daughter. She works for one of the nations largest telemarketing companies as an excutive and she can help. Did it for me and guess what! No more calls at 7:00 and 8:00pm at night. As I understand the program they use picks random phone number. All that has to be done is to identify yours as an omission. Pretty easy as I understand.
Cheers
Jeff
