I rent a room out of my house. I'm single with no kids but have a 3 bedroom 2.5 bath 1700 sq ft. home to myself. Only two rooms, the Master Bedroom and Family Room, have anything in them so the rest of the house goes unused. My mortgage has been reduced by about 25% and my utilites cut in half.

Ditto. I have a 1800 sf townhouse and I rent out one bedroom and bath and one garage space. I more or less use this income as disposable, but I guess I should apply it to mortgage...

several years? you mean like 15-20 years? billing $500/hr is not the same as bringing home $500/hr. There's still rent, bills, staffs, insurances, etc. Also, you still have to account for the non-billable (ie non-patient) hours that you put in to run the office.
A surgeon can make $3000/hour while doing surgery but the money is much diluted when you account for post op, dictation, paperwork.

my 2 cents, don't bother wasting all your youth time doing $hitty, minimum-wage side jobs that'll break your back and your ego.

if you're still in school, just study as hard as you can to get into the best college you can get accepted to, and study even harder to get into a professional school, whether it's a med/law/biz school.

would you rather work 80hr/wk making $7/hr, and have no real talent when you're 30 and max out at $50k/year, or become a professional making $300/hr??
For some people those minimum wage jobs is what gets them through college, I work at one so that my mom doesn't have to support me as much because I feel like i need to be responsible and earn my own way.

carfax - ftw!

like s2020 said...that may be the gross, but by the time you pay the rent, employees, mal practice insurance, etc.... it should be a good bit less.

I think my cousin's husband makes ~$300k as a plastic surgeon..... but he is 36-37 years old and has only been making that kind of $ for the past 3 years or so..... I am pretty sure he was in school / residency, etc........

wouldn't most Dr's also have some "hella" student loans to pay? maybe not?

I know plenty of people who pull in more than $100k/month. I guess if they worked a 40 hour week, that would be around $600/hour, but I'd say most of them only work maybe a 20 hour week, if that.

I use it for disposable income too though the original plan was to save the extra money.

Take sport bets as a middle man. You'll be surprised at how much you can make off commission. You may earn a couple dollars/hundreds per week and still keep your day job. But this gig is not intended for everyone.

Lots of good ideas floating around, but like F20C1 said, they're not for everyone, and most of them are not for me. The one that I will most likely do is the tax return. Seems like there is no risk, and some potential for $$$.

And if you still have something that hasn't been stated already, please post it.
