How does one get knighted?

Just get recognised by the Queen for services to the Empire. Oh, and be British.
Sir Elton John and Sir Bob Geldof are both knights also.

The way I hear it, to be a knight you have to be a British subject. But there are other Orders that you can have ascribed to you such as the 'Order of the Garter'. These are similar, but not a Knighthood, and I don't believe you can use the prefix 'Sir' in any official capacity.
