how many armed conflicts have you lived through?
i was just watching the history channel, and i suddenly realized how many armed conflicts i've lived through (seen on TV/newspaper). when i was a little boy in Taiwan, we were constantly living in fear of air raids, bombings, invasions, etc. from the reds. i remember practicing on how to hide in fallout shelters once a semster in school. i remember stories of my older cousin's friends who were serving mandatory tour of duty in the armed forces, how people's throats were slit in the middle of night by the reds who sent their frogmen across from Xiamen. i have forgotten the fear from the air raid sirens we'd hear from time to time when i was young when the MiGs would cross the invisible line into our airspace.
i remember watching with (some) fascination of the Falkland Islands War, but that was so far away.
i remember talks of the conflicts in the middle east, but that was so far away too.
have you lived through fear of armed conflicts before? i know some of my korean friends who had relatives serving in the DMZ and some of the horror stories there that were never made public.

I missed WWII by a couple of years, but lived through everything since then, including over forty years of the Cold War. I vividly remember the "Duck and Cover" air raid drills in elementary school during the fifties. Even as a youngster, I wondered how crouching in a school hallway and covering my head with my hands would protect me from nuclear holocaust. I'm glad it never happened; I pray it never will.
Born in '65. Too young to remember Vietnam but remember the cold war well enough. I am a DS/DS veteran as well. I was called from active reserves and served for 5 months, 2 of which was in Saudi with the 317th TAW (Tactical Airlift Wing).
