I'm not smart enough but my son is a sophomore at GaTech in Electrical Engr.
He is struggling. I pray for him!
At one time I think have the guys working for me were Ga.Tech. graduates, and I came to believe that the guys who had to work the hardest to get through Tech made better engineers than the guys who were smart enough to coast.

Compared to your son, I took the easy route to engineering.

But regardless the point is that getting you PE is very important in Civil Engineering.

There is definitely a huge shortage of Civil Engineering grads, especially here in the Bay Area. There is a huge demand. I am personally doing Civil Engineering and will graduate in another semester. Getting a PE is not necessary unless you want to get into design.

For me personally, I would rather pass on the PE (because of the cost of liability insurance) and get into construction. I already work as a project engineer at a construction project for a Medical Office building and I see a lot of potential in construction to make a lot of money for myself in the future.

I am not saying getting a PE is bad, but I'd rather not deal with doing calculations all day (when getting into design) and then having the burden of paying liability insurance and knowing if I mess up somewhere in my calcs, that people may get hurt or even die.

BS Electrical Engineering -- 1994 -- UF (Go Gators)
MS Computer Science -- 2004 -- UNC (Go Heels)

About the gap between my two degrees, I worked as an Electrical Engineer for several years before I figured out what I really wanted to do.
