I just found out that my ex girlfriend sent one of her psycho online friends in NJ ALL my personal information, including social security #, driver's license #, address, bank accounts, credit cards, EVERYTHING of my life on paper. Hes had this information for over a year now and hasn't done anything with it yet, like identity theft, but it doesn't mean he might in the future. However I'm so freaked out by this news. I already filed a police report and put fraud alerts on each of the three credit bureaus. What more can I do to protect myself from this guy stealing my identity? Is changing my SS# even possible?

I'd get new credit cards. Cancel the old ones. Never give this info to anybody. Especially a girlfriend. Check your credit report on a regular basis. At least every 3 months. Go the the Government pages and find out what else you can do. There is all kinds of info on identity theft. It is a huge problem. Get another drivers license if you can. Change as much of that info as you can. Each of these financial identity items are like a number in a combination to your assets. Change as many of the numbers as possible so that nobody can access your identity without all the numbers. They may have some or a few of the numbers but unless they have them all, the safe won't open.

Damn dude, that sucks. I don't think you can change your SSN. However, you *can* probably get your bank account and credit card numbers changed. At the very least I would change the credit cards. The CC companies will certainly send you new cards with very little hassle...if all else fails just tell them you lost 'em.

Try this theft id site

Hopefully it will be of some help.

Edit: jrfblueeyes had some good suggestions. Get new cards issued. Some cards have a feature that will allow you to require the use of a password or show picture id anytime the card is used. That means you'll have to wait while the purchase is called in and then give the id or password, but it's an idea...

Man, that sucks. You can in fact get a new SSN. My friend was a victim of identity fraud and that's what he had to do. He got all new credit cards and new SSN and everything. If you are worried enough I'd look into it. Good luck man!

Put a hit on the guy... Problem solved.

Seriously though - how do you know he has this information? If he hasn't used it, are you really sure? If the guy had malicious intent, the damage would already be done. Unfortuately, since you can't change your SSN, if he does have the info you're pretty much a sitting duck.

Mav, man sorry to hear that. All the guys above have made great suggestions. Change your cards, file a report. The guy may not have done anything with your personal info, but who knows whether he's passed it on to another person? How many other people have? I would do this, but not sure if it would work: I'd consult a lawyer, have the lawyer draft them both a letter (scare tactic) which would put ex-gf and psycho boy liable for damages up to $XXX,XXX should anything happen to you... but I'm certain your lawayer will ask whether you have proof that she A.) Has your personal information, B.) passed it to psychoboy? Do you?

Why is that only women come up with these ideas? Seriously, when it comes to getting back at someone, women are impossible to beat. (no pun intended )
